Need help with arranging above-cabinet "clutter"!
Comments (68)Ha, I happen to have a "faux" plant on top of my cabinets. I decorate for myself and not for others, so if I like it it's good. I have a wooden cheese box that has a green metal band around it, in front of that are some tins. I have lots of tins up there, along with a ceramic set of cannisters, cruets, spice etc. that belonged to a great aunt. I also have a large ceramic goose, very very out of style but my husband bought it for me in Napa when we were first married so that baby is staying. Ya'll would probably die laughing and snicker about my terrible taste, but I love it. I say if it makes you feel good, it works....See MoreHelp w/patio area
Comments (4)Edlincoln's suggestions will all ultimately get too large for the space unless you choose a flowering dogwood cultivar that has been selected for small size or narrow width, and then I think it will be too dense. I grow and like all of them, but all get wider than your space allows. Heptacodium miconioides AKA seven son flower will be about the right size and airy enough if pruned to tree form. Late summer flowers and the seeds continue the interest into fall, without seeding around. You could train one of the larger, stiffer-stemed Hydrangea paniculata AKA panicle hydrangeas as a tree. Look at Limelight, Pinky Winky, and Quickfire. They are sometimes found in nurseries already in tree form, but there is a premium paid for that and you don't have the same control of branch height and form as you would if you did it yourself. Some of the larger Viburnums will work pruned up as trees. Perhaps Thyme2dig will weigh in on this as she has done some of that in her garden. A great resource for searching for what you might like is the Missouri Botanic Garden's Plant Finder. You can either put in the name of a plant that's been suggested (scientific names work better than common names IME) and will get an accurate and detailed description of the plant including potential issues, or you can fill in requirements below, leaving anything you don't care about blank, and it will list suggestions....See MoreToo cluttered?
Comments (49)I agree. It seems however that you are attached to the lanterns and the idea of using them. In that case I might suggest mounting the hooks on a piece of driftwood or barn wood to mimic the picture deck wood. Hang the wood planks with hooks and dangle the lanterns from the hooks. What you would be doing is creating a sconce. I think this application would also bring a dimension of blue grey tying it all together. Good luck....See MoreHelp what kind of couch (color too) & color carpet w/ Balanced Beige
