Knotty Alder Kitchen Cabs -- Too Soft?
Comments (3)I'm considering semi-knotty alder. My cabinet maker is going to request less knots. I was worried about this too, so my cabinet maker is also getting me a beech sample. Either way, I've now spoken to three cabinet makers who say that they install lots of alder cabinets in kitchens, and have yet to have a complaint, or have people change their minds once they get a sample. They also said that a vertical surface isn't going to take the damage that a horizontal surface will take. I had pine in my last house and it's about as soft as alder. I had no problems with that at all. Of course, here in the south, cypress is also a real popular wood for cabinets, and it's soft like that too....See Morewalnut cabinets too dark?
Comments (4)If your kitchen is bright I'm sure you could get away with all walnut. How much direct sun does it get? It also depends a bit on how many upper cabinets you are doing. If you have lots and lots of uppers you really may want to consider white, glass or just open shelves. Just my opinion, but I find loads of upper cabinets in wood or dark paint a bit oppressive. But it totally depends on lighting, kitchen layout, whether you are going for a modern or traditional look, etc. Also keep in mind that natural walnut (not a walnut stain) really isn't very dark - I call it a medium brown. And walnut lightens with time. It will never be a light as maple of course, but it really isn't a "dark" dark wood. I have walnut lowers and just two white uppers plus a white pantry wall. My kitchen has low to medium light with some (not much) direct light at certain times of day. I thought all walnut would be a bit much....See MoreSoft white kitchen cabinets
Comments (1)Hi Gail. Perhaps take a look at Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. Be sure to get a sample pot and try it. White’s are tricky and have undertones you cannot see until you try the sample in the space you are considering....See MoreWill I regret two tone white & walnut kitchen cabinets?
Comments (14)Hi edelweiss- I am not sure how the wood lowers and white uppers will look to you 10 years down the line when it isn't so in style. Have you thought about doing all the uppers and lowers the same wood, with maybe two uppers glass? You could frost the glass or even just put an inexpensive peel-on film over the glass if you don't want the contents easily visualized. Then you could paint the island whatever color you want. Either white, or even that red that you like. With two different color cabinetry, (on the periphery and the island) I would not have a different type of counter top on the island, unless it were to be butcher block. I would also not get a red range top. Your tastes may change and a range top is very expensive to replace. Or you may need replacement parts, and red may not be available. Or you may sell, and red is very taste specific, and that may be a deal breaker....See Moredan1888
