Comments (27)Actually, Jerry..we did have a pretty good frost two nights (?) before...(I covered everything). Then the heat wave two days straight right after...I've been finding some damage on two more hostas since...and it occurred within 48 hours of frost. It could be frost damage instead? I'm not that familiar with frost damage...cold damage yes, but that is different. Sandy, it always happens in May (a lightbulb went off in my head re your unfurling comment) and coincides with heat waves during the day. Last year it occurred around the same time or earlier as I have pics dated May 29/14 that show damage that is somewhat aged already...but the exception this year was that it wasn't fully leafed out yet. Bruce, Sandy, Jerry and Don - I asked for advice because I was waffling, sitting on the fence, ... thank you for giving me the nudge I needed. I really appreciate it and will leave her alone as recommended. . . and yes, I shall enjoy the beauty, Bruce. :-)...See MoreGrowing Frances Williams in the South
Comments (28)Will do! :-). I've been watering deeply every day...today heating up to 33/91F. I watered at base. Would love to sprinkle all over but not in this heat. I usually trim off if edges aren't too bad. The last place possible to move her would be on west side... not this year though. Damage concentrated on centre leaves and on lower right side. You can see sun shining on leaves and also on QOTS. Sorry about the poop show. You know, it could always be worse...this is not so bad really...? considering she was moved just a month ago....See MoreTo dig out a large Frances Williams
Comments (13)As it happened, I got it out in one piece, with very little trouble. Just ‘round and ‘round with the pitchfork before I started prying. Getting it up and over the other plants to the wheelbarrow was more challenging. The root ball is about 16” in diameter, and weighs more than the 40 pound bag of topsoil I carried over to dump in the hole. But now, having it out, I can easily see where there are gaps between the eyes, and divide it into about 3 pieces without hacking it to bits. A much smaller hosta, a white centered one originally from my grandmother via my mom, gave me much more trouble to get out. (I guess Grandma WAS rather stubborn). That one also wilted and sulked big time, even with the stems taped together....See MoreFrances Williams- sporting 2 different colors of leaves
Comments (11)im pretty sure.. the yellow version was named 40 or 50 years ago ... lets see if i can find it ... look here .. link below ... in the right margin.. look for the YY .. yellow center ...yellow edge.. aka ..... all yellow .... and you will find golden sunburst .... but you wont find a bb ... so you read the story.. and find out its out of sieboldiana 'Elegans' ... anybody else want to add the history of Elegans..and grouping all yellow versions of sieboldiana under one name.. wrongly.. i dont have time right now ... all hosta are unstable. so its not all that uncommon to have it doing weird things ... but it is sure cool.. isnt it.. thx for the pic .. and welcome to the hosta forum.. cool car in your tiny pic .... ken http://myhostas.be/db/view/Frances+Williams...See More- 5 years ago
