Boho-Modern Living Room and Dining Room. Thoughts and advice?
Comments (5)I think your design is a great starting point. Love all the plants you have going on. That ottoman doesn't fit the style very well, but I think a different ottoman could. Something more like the one in hollybar's first pic. An ikat patterned fabric would be great. Also, you'll notice that every inspo pic has bright white walls. Yours are very neutral, so they'll likely work, but your room might feel a bit different because of the color. I would avoid using lots of different colors, since boho tends to be very neutral. The pop of color on the ottoman is all you need. Try to keep the art fairly subdued, or very natural feeling. Love the white frames and mats in your design. Botanical prints could work well. Or maybe use more structural art pieces instead of prints. Look through all those inspo pics for ideas. Texture is super important to make boho work, especially since there's not a lot of color. The interest comes from the texture. Wood, leather, metal, knit are all great textures to introduce. Subtle patterns are good too. Get a very textural rug as a good base. Maybe sisal or more shaggy....See Morehi i need help with my living room and dining area
Comments (5)I'm sorry, I don't really understand what your question is, exactly? Are you asking what more you should add, or looking for advice on whether you should add another couch or a table, or...? How big is the room, first? Do you have or can you do a quick sketch or photo, and post it to give us some idea of the layout (like, where are the doors, are all the walls square or is there an angled wall or a wide entryway into another room or something)? Where are the windows and how big are they? Do you want lots of sunlight to enter the room or do you want blackout curtains? What color are the walls, or what color will you be painting them (or are you looking for advice on that, too)? What type of flooring is in the room now--tile, wood? That's a lovely little sofa (my couch is also from Macy's! I love it) and rug; it can definitely be the start of a lovely room! Going just by the info you've given and nothing else, I'd pick one of the light colors from the rug--maybe the palest spot of orange--and paint the walls that color, with ivory curtains (or ivory/cream walls and orange curtains, you choose; I'm currently painting my own living room orange so I may be biased). Get a nice print or painting for one wall; a beach scene, maybe, with lots of blues, yellows, and oranges. You could get a coffee table and a side table or two in the same wood as the sofa legs, or get some painted or finished in either a pale or a bright color, depending on what look and feel you're going for. Like, a bright yellow or orange coffee table, maybe in an interesting shape, would make the room look more cheerful and modern, whereas a plain, solid rectangle table in ivory/cream or palest blue would be more cozy-looking. A bright solid or patterned throw will give it one look whereas a soft, thick, fuzzy throw in a solid pale color will give it another. So what look are you going for? What have you done in the rest of the house? Good luck! There are a lot of great people here with great taste, so if you can provide more info you're bound to get some excellent advice and ideas!...See MoreWhat makes your dining room linens modern or contemporary?
Comments (30)Does anyone have a set of placemats (& tableclot) for each season: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall? ...Or is that just too much? I have several for autumn, in autumnal prints/colors, including the one above. I don't have many matching cloth napkins since I like to mix and match; I also have a set of natural colored linen napkins which work well with most of the tablecloths. For the rest of the year, most of the tablecloths are some version of blue-and-white block print or batik, and I just change up the napkins, plates, glassware, etc. for the seasons. Other than wood/grass/bamboo placemats, do your placemats ever look the same after the first wash? It seems the sewn/2-sided ones never do for me. My placemats are all wicker/rattan/grass, or cork-backed (Pimpernel), so this hasn't been a problem. Be aware that the current Pimpernel placemats are nowhere near the quality they used to be. And, what do you do about stains? Not having to worry about them is definitely another plus in my book for colorful patterns : ) . Especially since we're hosting Canadian Thanksgiving later today with about 25 people. I wouldn't worry too much about placemats not looking the same after washing. I think there's something lovely and welcoming about well-used, and clearly well-loved, table linens, that show they're used often to welcome others around the table. And unless you're actually hosting very formal dinners, I think there's a lot to be said for guests as well as hosts not worrying too much about perfect, pristine-looking table linens through the entire meal. As a guest or a host, I would much rather concentrate on the conversation, family, friends, than worrying about spills and stains that might happen or have happened. At one dinner with a heavy white damask tablecloth and napkins, and all the best silver sparkling, the conviviality came to a screeching halt after a guest spilled a glass of red wine, and the hostess seemed distracted and upset; we all pretty much got the impression that she couldn't wait for us to leave to break out the club soda. I also think of the napkins and other linens I have from my mother, some older embroidered napkins from my grandmother, and think of the memories and history. If I can't convince you : ) , then I'd either agree with Jan's Sunbrella suggestion, or suggest linen tablecloths, placemats, and napkins, in darker colors (with a different color for each season) and a mangle/clothes press. LinenMe has some very nice things. Linen tends to look better the more it's used and washed. Good luck! Am off to preheat the oven for the turkey : )...See MoreNeed Help with Living Room Area Rug Ideas
Comments (11)OK. I have attached a pic of my living room. I have also attached a few pics of some rugs that have peaked my interest (the yellow flowers being my favorite). The only items in the room that will remain the same are the couch and loveseat. I'd like to keep my curtains if possible, but I'm not opposed to switching them out. Other than those 2 things, everything else in the room will be updated. Thanks for any input you can give!!...See Morepaadoggi
