Can malathion poison an ash tree?

I have a 50 year old massive ash tree in my yard. Due to water restrictions and drought in my area, the grass has died off and therefore my yard is all dirt at the moment. Anyhow, to keep a gang of feral cats from using my yard as a litter box, I sprayed the surrounding area around the tree and drip line with malathion to help repel them. Before leaving town for several days, I decided to water the same area to keep the tree watered. When I came back home I noticed the tree shedding half of its leaves which are now dried and brown. Is malathion toxic enough to do this??
