This is a simple case of cool and warm tones clashing. The grey in the kitchen is cool toned, but the beige is warm toned. Maybe try using a warmer grey paint in the kitchen and see if that helps.

That brown could be beautiful! Keep in mind what is going to make a big difference is how you light the spaces/how much natural light they get. Here is a good house to look at for inspiration-- its similar in style and color scheme to yours: modern farmhouse

In my opinion it's the fixtures that's causing the clash. Brass fixtures + hardware would tie it all in.

We haven't seen the whole kitchen, but I don't know that a cool gray would give a farmhouse feel. I have to agree that a warm gray, if you absolutely must have gray (it's on its way out). I'd be tempted to choose a warm white like Antique White.

A blue front door is fine. But IMO interior doors should blend in, not be the stars. Keep them neutral with whatever color your trim is.

I don’t know about your colors but I wouldn’t stain those floors walnut. They’re the color they’re meant to be.

If you have a powder room or a guest bathroom let him paint the whole thing blue. It's just colorful interior doors tend to be a huge turn off for resale, and not super easy to change, so I don't recommend it.

Thank you Sina Sadeddin Architectural Design, that makes sense. The house was built in the early 1800s and supposedly the doors have been a shade of blue for a very long time, it might be why he likes it so much. I appreciate the feedback.

Check out Benjamin Moore “Classic Gray” and consider using it throughout your home! It is a pale, warm gray that sometimes even leans ivory, depending on the light. I think it’s actually charming and unique to have the blue doors in your old farmhouse. Makes it unique and creative!

I love your current color and the blue doors. The great thing is that you can keep them for now and change them if you ever tire of them. I would NOT do any grays. Your wood trim is so beautiful, too. I agree wholeheartedly about the floor color. The current color is perfect. Dark floors not only darken a house but they are a nightmare to maintain.

The downstairs wood that is in the dining room will one day need to be taken out as it is thinning and splintering... So, eventually we'll need to have all the floors the same. Upstairs kind of determined the future of the downstairs.

Those original floors are MONEY. Those of us who love old houses die for those floors. Please reconsider doing anything to them. They will look like a caricature of a farmhouse. They already have “the look”. You have a real farmhouse, please respect its integrity. All the new “farmhouse look” houses can be spotted by the very things you want to do to your authentic home. As far as gray, the PO of our house used gray in the entry hall. It looked cold and unwelcoming in our climate and setting. I waited until the house told me what the house wanted. It seems happy now!

Remodeling1840. I agree about the floors. But have been torn. My daughter recently went to the ER with an inch long splinter in her foot. We all get splinters. She was wearing socks. The contractor at first was just like us, encouraging us to save the floors, like we did upstairs. But then he took a closer look and saw that if they are sanded down there won't be much left at all. We plan on keeping the wood and putting somewhere or somehow using it. What do you think?

I’m sorry about your daughter. It sounds like you don’t have a choice. My house was built in 3 stages- 1803, 1817, and 1836. My floors vary by the build date and, heartbreaking for us, a rescue of the oldest part done by the second family to own it in 1927. Personally I would keep the color of the floors downstairs in a sympathetic replacement of your current floor. For true house historians, the first thing they all notice is the discrepancy of the 1927 oak floors in a house of walnut and cherry. I am forever grateful they saved the house, but I wish they had matched the floors to the original. If you can’t use the old flooring for another project right now, store it and wait for the right inspiration. We have found old wood in the little carriage house and in our attic. It awaits future projects. I am excited about your rescue of this home. Keep a notebook with pictures and document why you did or didn’t do something a certain way. We were given such a book.
