The door that drjoann linked in her post above is the door we bought. We did not like the "realistic" looking raised grain on the sample they had, and off-handedly mentioned it to the salesman. He checked, and found that we could get it in a different finish--I think we got the mahogany, which has the normal flat finish. We had a choice of 3 different looks for the caming. I forget what ours was called--it's sort of a dull silver/gray--not the really dark color or the gold that were the other two choices. We have a transitional story and a half house, and we LOVE the door and its one side lite. The design of the glass in this door especially appealed to us. Anne

Too late to help now but maybe someone else will benefit. I gel stained my Pella fiberglass entry door 6.5 years ago and it looked great! Used Minwax gel stain and their spar varnish, as directed by Pella. However, it did not stand up to weather at all. It chipped and had to be varnished again every 6 months. This Spring it chipped all the way through to the fiberglass and pulled stain with it! Believe me, I did everything properly. My door faces south east and has no roof. But a neighbor whose fiberglass door faces north had the same trouble - he used the same products as I. My neighbor got disgusted and stripped his down to fiberglass and restained it with Sikkens products 3 years ago. No trouble since. Sikkens makes a Door and Window stain that does not require varnish over top. Fortunately for me, just before I started stripping about 36 layers of varnish off my door, it delaminated! Pella brought me a new unfinished slab (under warranty) and I'm using Sikkens to stain it. I've been told the varnish is the trouble. It's like putting a sheet of glass against the door, trapping the heat. Plus it isn't flexible enough to expand and contract. If I put up a storm door to protect it, the problem would've been worse due to trapped heat. Sikkens is specifically made for fiberglass doors. Simpson is in my opinion the best "off the shelf wood door" available. Jeldwen is a pretty good door it was better when Morgan owned them but they were dumbed down a little in my opinion when they were purchased by Jeldwen. As far as the Aurora F/G door this if I am not mistaken is the IWP doors which were at the time before Jeldwen purchased them shaky at best in my honest opinion and I have seen no evidence in any of the products Jeldwen produces that they are higher quality than under the prior manufacturers.

Totally, The JELD-WEN Aurora comes completely finished - stained to your color choice. You don't need to do anything to it but install it. The internal construction of the Aurora far exceeds any other fiberglass door on the market. The other "un-finished" fiberglass doors will need to be stained on site and a clear-coat added to seal. You should also keep in mind that fiberglass doors come with a "wood grain" or smooth. If you want to stain an un-finished door, you need to make sure you buy one with a wood grain.
