Paint or stain fireplace surround and built-ins?
We are remodeling entire first floor, about to install wood floor in a chocolate color, white perimeter kitchen cabinets, an SW Aquaverde island, all with Caesarstone Cloudburst Concrete quartz counters & black matte pulls & fixtures. Walls are currently SW Latte; may change to SW Stone Lion. My dilemma is whether to paint out the fireplace surround to white, or do some combo (white but with stained--to match new floor--shelves & tops), or stain the surround and built-ins darker to match new floor (or is that just too much stained wood?). Attaching picture--not the best light, as current surround and built-ins are more orange in person. All our woodwork and molding is white. Our new fireplace tile will be a tumbled black porcelain brick. Please help!!

Comments (2)I think painted would probably blend more, but I have painted cabinets in my kitchen and I'm constantly having to touch up chips. Admittedly, I have a preschooler and a kitchen gets a lot more abuse than a family room, but there are a lot of chips that I can't blame on the child... We have a similar situation, and ended up painting the built-ins the same color as the wall (but high gloss), since all white seemed like it would be too stark, and stained seemed like it might appear to be a dark hole, or too much contrast. The wall is a pale taupe-y white, I guess you'd call it. 5 years agoGreat advice everyone. Heres my opinion on what we have done on similar situations. we would paint the cabinets to match your trim color and paint the walls where the cabinets and shelfs with an accent color of your choice and then if you were planning on changing the wall colors I will say do a color from Sherwin-Williams called Agreeable Gray.
