A good affordable slide in range?

Our old Kenmore smooth top electric decided to turn its own broiler on today and almost burned down our house. Had to flip the breaker to turn it off. I googled it and apparently it's a common problem with this model, so needless to say we're in the market for an emergency replacement.

We are planning on redoing our kitchen in 3 years, so anything we get is temporary. Are all the base models basically the same? We've ruled out kenmore (obviously) and GE (due to their recent mass exodus of qualified engineers).
Which leaves us with the Samsung, Whirpool, and Frigidaire base models for around $500. They all have this bizarre "warming" burner in the back, what's up with that? Are any of them actually better than the others or is it preference?

Is the upgrade to convection (+~$100) or induction (+~500) worth it? Obviously the ROI would be shorter than normal with the renovation plans, but 3 years is still a bit of time to live without these things if it's REALLY worth it.
