Bunching Onions in Oklahoma

I am looking for info on bunching onions, maybe known by perennial, Asian, multiplying, or walking onions. I don’t mean spring salad onions. I’m looking for someone in northeast Oklahoma or western Arkansas who can give me variety names and cultural requirements. I am looking for the kind of onion that will survive Tulsa climate year round, year after year. I’m mainly looking for zone 6b hardiness with most of the rainfall in the spring and the fall On a sandy soil.

Try oriental seed suppliers such as: https://www.kitazawaseed.com/seeds_japanese_bunching_onion.html There are also others. Or google for seed for Allium fistulosum. There are lots of kinds.

Walking onions are something else again; they are also known as tree onions or Egyptian onions or topset onions depending on where you are and which of them you happen to run across.

Both types should be quite hardy and probably work just fine for you provided your part of OK is not actual or near desert.

I agree with OldDutch, multiplier or egyptian onions are your best bet. Very hardy, they multiply really well, so don't be afraid to start with just a few. My favorite has been these.

Thanks farmerdill... Good info.. I'll just leave those potted plants "as is" as an unknown.. I like them because I'm getting good large sized green onion leaves to cook and the leaves keep growing back really fast. Can anybody answer my other question about "Evergreen" and "Nebuka" being used synonymously here in the US? Thanks again...

I chop up my extras, lay them out on parchment covered cookie sheets and pop them into the freezer. When they are all frozen I put them in a Food Saver bag for the freezer. Whenever I need some I cut the bag, pour out just what I need, no sticking together, then use the Food Saver bag again and back into the freezer for the next time. I think glass jars take up too much space for a small amount like little 4oz sizes but in a quart jar they would take up less space, but, I prefer the plastic freezer bags because they are lightweight and space saving and I can line them up vertically in a shoe box in the freezer.

I'm growing evergreen white bunching onions for the first time this year. Started from seed on January and I have harvested several dozen as scallions so far. I must say they are the sweetest scallions I have ever tasted. I have one 3x3 bed with about 100 planted that I am going to thin to around 4-6" spacing and attempt to over winter so they will hopefully divide next year. I don't believe they are supposed to go to seed the first year but that remains to be seen. I just started some more from seed to plant out in August for scallions and possibly overwintering.

Thanks for the help Dutch. I was hoping that you would chime in with your experience growing such things. I was getting a little concerned since I had not seen you post recently...hope you are doing well. I will wait until spring for the vast majority of them but I may experiment and divide a couple this fall. I don't really have anywhere to transplant them at the moment anyway as all beds are either currently occupied or spoken for by fall garlic plantings. They kind-a-sort-a went dormant for a couple months and looked pretty ragged but they are sending up a lot of new green growth now that they are dividing.
