I don't have any kordes roses at all. But it looks real healthy.

2 thoughts - I understand that Kordes roses are bred in a coldish climate, and are famous for being cold hardy. HMF says this rose grows to 4 feet in height. HOWEVER, we have all discovered that if you grow a rose in a climate which is warmer than where it is bred, the height expected by the breeder will often be WAY too short.

My other thought is that somehow the root stock has sent up suckers. Can you look at the LEAVES on the bottom of the bush and on these long canes? If they are identical, then you just have a rose which wants to grow taller in your climate. If they are different, they are rootstock suckers (I am betting they are NOT that).

If this were my bush, what I would do is train those long canes horizontally on that wall right behind them, at the bottom of the fence. Then WAIT, and see what they do. They should send up vertical laterals all along the canes, which will bloom. I would not do anything with or to them until you see what they look like next Spring. My guess is you will just have larger bushes than you expected because your climate is not as cold as where they were bred. This is not a bad thing, as the rest of the bush should fill out at the same height. If you do not like the bush that large, you might have to move it, or someone on here who has one and keeps it smaller by pruning can give you advice about that. But, I would encourage you to leave it for another season first, to see what you are dealing with.

Thanks everyone for the input. Jackie, I’m pretty sure they are not from the root stock. This is the second flush of bloom and the flowers are true to Summer Romance. I wanted to cut them to a more desirable height, however that means I would have to sacrifice all the flower buds as every “long arm” has a cluster of buds now. I think my plan is I’ll wait until they all bloomed then give them a cut down to 3-4’ in height. I’ll see how they perform after that point. Thanks again for your advice.

Wow! I planted a new Summer Romance this Spring and it hasn’t grown nearly as much as yours or bloomed at all. I planted it behind my Flower Carpets, partly because I heard it tends to get tall and bloom mostly at the tips. And hopefully it will survive in that inaccessible spot. Will see what happens.

My own root from Chamblee took three Summers to grow large enough or two full years. One of mine is larger than the other but the biggest is at least four feet tall maybe five.

Jwusauk, is yours grafted or won root? Mine are grafted so they took off early but yours will catch up in a year and two and probably eventually outrun mine. I have flower carpet roses too - pink supreme and double red. They are vigorous and send out thousands of flowers. My only complaint is they are not truly dwarf in my zone as they send out octopus arms up to 4 feet.

Vaporvac, this is my first year planting them so I’ll see how they winter as they are grafted. We sometimes have harsh winters that temp can drop down to 0 F at night. I couldn’t plant them as deep that the graft union is 3” below the ground as recommended because I had to consider the drainage aspect. I know roses like loamy well drained spot.

Another bloom from this morning. The flower form is quite formal and symmetrical which reminds me of some camellias such as “Black Tie”. I’ll probably move all 4 of them to another spot this winter learning they are actually 6-7’ tall roses in my zone now. Maybe I can create a spot allowing them to cascade down with their long arching branches. They are so healthy, fragrant and graceful in their own ways I’m just not ready to give them up any time soon.

Yes, the flower has a beautiful form I think lovely fragrance even in the heat, although they are smaller as the heat rises. With so many of them it hardly matters! Mine were completely tip hardy in -7 nights here in zone 6 a / B. You could try pruning them to encourage more lateral growth, but I currently have a cane that shot up well past 5 feet tall and I'm going to leave it. Yours looks stunning in your beds, but that is some crazy growth just like mine!

Do you mean pegging them? I’ve just planted a bare root grafted summer romance in quite a small space and this is a hot zone so it might get away on me. I wonder if I could peg it if the canes end up being too long?

Lenarufus, I think pegging as a technique work on all roses, as long as they have long enough branches allowing to be bent. Try yours and let us know how it goes!

zzzone, mine is indeed own root, and appears to be sleeping this year. Hoping it puts out gorgeous flowers like yours next year! You're right that the pink flower carpet is ridiculously vigorous--I have to keep hacking mine back. The idea for the Summer Romance is that it will drape into the Flower Carpets and mix in somehow instead of being buried alive like my Fairy roses!

Pegging will work with any flexible cane. Depending on the rose variety they respond sometimes with laterals as long as the main cane. Thus making the situation even worse.

Another thing that greatly affects the growth of roses is where the country is in comparison to the equator. Germany and England both lie on lines of greater longitude. So they can still be egual to a zone7 here but the sunlight is less intense and with a shorter growing season the rose stay smaller. The more intense sunlight coupled with a longer growing season makes for huge roses in much of the US.

Ignore all of the above .. I don’t know WHAT is happening .... but I think somehow this forum on my iPad keeps switching from the American web site .com to the Australian one .com.au. When I noticed it had switched to the Australian address I logged out and went to the .com address, and the original post was there. !!

So I googled Summer Romance climber, and I see others have had this problem. Photos of my spring flush, with Ingrid Bergman tree rose, and the second flush, today, with octopus arms.
How do I fix this?
