Porches & Decks Flooring Design Dilemma

What type of flooring would you do on this concrete porch?

We use this porch ALL THE TIME and I can't stand the concrete. It's quite rough, and stains incredibly easily, especially with the red clay stuff that the dog tracks in. As a result, it looks awful. We put these rugs down as a temporary measure last year, but now looking to finish the space.

We got a bunch of different porcelain tiles, ranging from dark slate to almost white travertine-look, and some various other styles. Since the house is mostly gray with white trim, we were thinking that we should avoid gray on the floor out here...

But nothing works. Beiges don't look right, slate is too dark, cream is too light... We have a porcelain wood-look tile plank that is light gray, and actually looks decent, but I don't know. We lack design sense!

Any recommendations? The space is 28'x11', covered, walled on 3 sides, with screen to the back yard. Steps down onto a concrete patio.

What is the floor you have inside? Tile? Don't laugh, I'm in S Fl where we have lots of tile. Wood? Wood-look tile? Something else?

I have always thought that it makes a wonderful extension of your current living space by having the same flooring extend from your living area to the covered patio area.

Of course, this only works with certain types of material. Something like the concept below where the folding doors (or sliders) hide completely and the floor extends the living area to the outdoors.

ETA: If you can't use the same material, either use a totally different material or use something that has the same color so it blends. Without knowing what you have on the floors in your current home it is hard to say. Here is one where a different material was used extensively for their outdoor areas:

It's a good idea, but the entire rest of the house is oak hardwood floors, which wouldn't hold up outdoors with our humidity fluctuations.

Just a thought. Do you have to have some of the caramel in the counter? Once you choose a counter with caramel, your counter becomes less neutral and perhaps less timeless. I know you have caramel tones in your wood, but wood is supposed to be neutral so your are not required to repeat.it. Not saying the caramel is not nice and would not look great, but I just want to be sure you see that you could go with a counter with more neutral colours in it if that was what you find. What would you do with this awkward porch?

I'd put a very small, narrow bench or stool under the window -- a good place to sit while taking off shoes, or set down groceries while hunting for keys. In the corner I'd place a large plant that can handle the shade, in a beautiful, colorful pot that complements your great door. You might have room for a cluster of pots, one tall and a few shorter. And yes, add some stepping stones in the gravel area.

I agree pattern is probably not the way to go with such tall narrow panels. A cream that goes with the rock could be pretty; possibly a gray. I suspect it would be tough to find a light blue that would go with the rock plus whatever else you want to use in the room. I find the varied height of the shades you mocked up distracting, and it looks like you'd have to do the lower height in the adjacent room as well. If you're set on having shades, maybe you can get a mock up of them all across at the level above the cornice. And the lower rod to correspond. If they're well lined it might not be obvious that the window on the far left actually has blank wall behind it. Good luck with your move!

First, what a luxury to have such a wonderful porch. But I know what you mean. A floor can be the most challenging of all. Sometimes, nothing looks right but there is a flooring out there that will transform your porch into a space of your dreams. And even though you said you already have enough gray, I think the right shade and material is exactly the way to go. Check these out at Lowe's. Black rubber tile with gray specks, Apache Mills #189346 - dramatic but fab. Congolese DuraStone Arichitexture Turret Gray # 963138 - subtle and sophisticated looks like linen or weathered wood. Last, Congoleum DuraStone Stone Ledgers $963152 - looks like strata from a canyon wall.
