Shantung Maple not growing
Comments (15)Hi, first post here. My Shantung Maple is also not growing since the North Dallas drought the summer before last (summer of 2011). The tree was bought from the nursery in Gunter about 4 years ago and it was growing the first 2 to 3 years. It is about 12' high with the base maybe 6 or 7 inches in diameter. The tree is planted in heavy clay. There is a 10' red tip photina about 12 to 15 feet away. It is planted on the S side (backyard) side of the house bounded by the service alley (10' away), driveway (10') and the yard has little grass near the tree. Some expert guy told me his survived in sand with no irrigation during the drought so I figured I over-watered. Since then I removed the mulch and the soil is bare within the drip line. I'd guess there are 20 to 30 branches (highests branches) with the top 6 inches having no leaves since the drought, only leaf sprouts (or whatever they are called). I will examine more closely and maybe post a photo. Any help is welcome and sorry for such a long post....See More"Highland Park" Bigtooth Maple
Comments (10)I no longer have it but it was just under 10 years old. I saw it last year and its fall color was still just ok compared to other maples. I'll check to see if I have pics but don't recall taking any for the lack of fall color. This one got through the 2012 winter which was considered one of the worst winters in 30 years without any dieback so I'd expect it to perform fairly well in Zone 4 ecspeically if its somewhat sheltered. Growth rate seemed comparable to other sugar maples but it was a bit more narrow and less vigorous then lets say Fall Fiesta. So its online descriptions appear accurate. As HM4E mentioned it may have better fall color in more arid climates....See MoreNorway/Shantung maple hybrids...worthwhile?
Comments (13)I haven't had as much experience with Blaine's Dragon as with Fire Dragon. My BD is still somewhat small and really hasn't grown a lot and not much fall color. I have 4 FD at my mother's house that are 15+ feet tall and are doing well with decent fall color (for Houston) at times. Honestly it seems to be hit and miss with the trees. Some grow really well and some don't, probably due to natural variability between trees and the understock they are grafted onto. I have a Skinny Dragon that is growing really well and a few seedlings that are doing well. I have a purple Shantung hybrid that has sucked so far but the root system was poor when I got it. I even got a note from the HOA to replace the "dead" tree in my front yard that is the hybrid. I'll give through next spring to see what it does. I also have a bunch of small seedlings in the ground just to see how they grow and they range from a few inches tall to 4+ feet tall....See MoreShantung maple vs gingko fall color
Comments (5)Yes, it's always red for Fire Dragon. Shades of red may change year to year though depending on the weather. Sooner Plant Farm sells them but they are expensive if you're interested in them.... Seems that late fall heat wave after nice gradual cooling off weather messed up Fire Dragon's fall color. Mostly on the Orange side as a result and more shriveled up leaves earlier than usual....See MorePecci
