Architect/Kitchen Design Question
Comments (21)Here's what I did and it worked very well for us. After the architect drew up our floorplan, I was not satisfied with the kitchen (it was tiny and closed off from living spaces). I communicated my thoughts to the architect and asked that he rework the laundry, dining, kitchen area of the plan for me. Still not satisfied with that area after three rounds of revisions, I took the entire floorplan to a kitchen designer. She drew up several ideas for the laundry, dining, kitchen space that were a bit more specific than a mere floorplan. I worked with the KD to come up with the perfect plan for us for that part of the space. Then, I took the KD's work back to the architect who incorporated this redesigned space into his drawings and finalized the plans for the builder to use. I am very pleased with how this space turned out. It's very different than the original plan that the architect drew up. The $500 I spent with the KD to do the redesign absolutely is the best $500 I spent in the entire build. Now, the KD I used is not one of those KDs that works for a specific cabinet line and is focused only on what cabinets you pick for a particular layout. This was a KD independent of any cabinet manufacturer and was very talented in making me think about how I wanted to use the space and then designing it for our use. I used an onsite custom cabinetmaker for all of our cabinets and our trim. None of our cabinetry or trim detail was ever reduced to CAD or other detailed drawings before he began building. That made me very nervous. I simply made him a book of pictures I had cut out of magazines (or printed off of this site) and he mimicked those pictures beautifully. Good luck in your design and in your build! It's a long process, but worth it in the end. Our build was fraught with drama, but I've forgotten most of the negative stuff by now, and I've only been in the house four months!...See MoreHiring an independent kitchen designer?
Comments (14)There is definitely such a person as an independent kitchen designer. People's experiences with them have been mixed -- the best ones are great and worth the money. I hired one and the experience was only OK. I would say (and I work in a creative field) the BEST way to go into a process like this is to do your own research, develop your own tastes, your own opinions and have some kinds of design landmarks for yourself. It's OK to be stuck! It's OK to change your mind, even radically, as a designer presents options you never considered! It's not OK to go in and say "Gee, I don't know, there are so many choices. What do you think we should do?" The downside is that hiring an independent kitchen designer and going through that process usually takes awhile -- weeks or months and several drafts. And it is expensive, usually thousands of dollars -- but always ASK the designer how they work, how they are paid, how much, at what stage you get buildable plans. Quick ways to find a good designer in your area (independent or otherwise): Follow the breadcrumbs. You know how much you're spending on your kitchen. Go to the good appliance, cabinet, paint, hardware etc. stores in your budget in your area (you're probably checking them out anyway). Ask for their recommendations. I have found referrals to excellent people this way -- and they're happy to recommend their valued customers in the trade, knowing a good recommendation makes 2 happy customers. Day to day though, this forum is a great resource! Almost instant feedback, free, taken as a whole, encyclopedic in its knowledge. And nice too. Good luck!...See Moredoes anyone regret not hiring a kitchen designer?
Comments (41)We have a KD and I am so thankful for her. In fact, I found her here on Gardenweb! My DH and I had spent probably 70+ hours on the layout and it was quite good if I do say so myself, but she made it a ton better. She came up with ideas I never would have envisioned, no matter how many books I read on the subject (and there were a lot) or places I would visit. She made it more functional and prettier, and anticipated potential problems that neither DH and I nor our architect saw coming. We pay her by the hour, she is not associated with a cabinet company, and just gives us really good advice. We already knew what we were going to do with the general finishes (white shaker inset cabs, blue Cornufe, lots of drawers, Shaw's sink, soapstone counters, Thermador column refrigerator and freezer, etc.) That hasn't changed and it isn't the part we wanted help with. It's the function and form that we wanted to get just right, and I think that she has done that. That being said, I honestly think we would have had a very nice kitchen on our own, it's just going to be a lot better because of her. Also, we talked to MANY other designers and even worked with a designer on the kitchen for a couple of hours before we found our current one, and none were very helpful. You have to find the one that works for you. And if you don't, you may well be better off not using one at all!...See MoreKitchen designer not so helpful - Need your help!
Comments (19)Jessrae, What about moving the beverage refrig over where the 21 in drawers are next to the banquette. It could be a beverage center w wine bottles above and a small sink for the kids to hand wash before eating or a wet bar. The advantium oven is both a speed oven and a microwave. Use the glass turn table to microwave and it comes with the graphite trays for cooking. It would eliminate the micro drawers and free up some options. There are so many settings for all kind of foods to reheat /melt/etc , it would be a shame not to use it. It is preset w all the beverages and foods to reheat at the appropriate time less than 5 min., more like 30 sec. The prep area to the right of the dish machine with dirty dishes to the left realistically won't happen as people clear dishes from your table to the counter above the trash and dish machine. Revisit the prep area. The recent updated drawing with the undercounter refrig next to the refrig seems redundant. I was looking at my overhang and would not want to reach under it even for items not used often. With the banquette there, I would eliminate the overhang where it is and have an overhang to the right or left on lsland to be used not as a family eating area but for one to visit w you while you prep or for one to read paper w cup of coffee or use a lap top as an alternative to sitting at the banquette. It will all come together for you....See MoreUser
