Overwhelmed! Looking for an Interior Designer.

We are two weeks from the start of our addition (laundry room, office, master bedroom and bathroom ) along with re-flooring the existing portion of the home. I simply cannot wrap my mind around the endless choices of materials and how to make it look like a million bucks, without breaking the bank!

So we are looking for a creative, motivated, organized professional that could take on a time constrained project.

Hi Lilica - did you try doing a search on houzz for professionals? (go to the search box up top where the magnifying glass is, type in "interior designer" and look for the line in green that says "interior designer in find a pro"

Angie's List is also a great place to find designers, I would throw our hat in the ring but we are a San Diego company and don't quite go that far. Good luck!

Who drew up the plans? The permits? Have the placements for plumbing and electrical already been decided upon/submitted?

A well trained designer would have been in on this from the start - setting about the placements for all the fixtures. And fixtures include windows, etc.

Did you work with an architect? A Design-build firm? A well established GC? Whomsoever started this project with you *should have a couple of phone numbers you could try.

Personally I always recommend working with CERTIFIED professionals. And low and behold California has their own certification board. Here's their link:

If you hover your mouse over the word "Consumers" you will be offered a drop-down menu which includes "Hire a local certified interior designer". This would be the place I start.

And if you get recommendations from your General Contractor, you can use the website to verify their certificate.

If your husband doesn't like the look of brass, then is he going to hate your current choice for a living room fixture? If so, I might take a step back and see if you can return or replace your living room choice with something upon which you both agree and then match your other two fixtures to that. If there's no chance to get a non-brass finish in the living room but you want to avoid brass for the other two, that's not too hard. You could do something that is all glass or some other material with no metal finish on it whatsoever. If you are talking about blending another metal with brass, sometimes the oil-rubbed or Mediterranian bronze fixtures have flecks of gold/brass coloration in them, but again, if your husband doesn't like gold, then why go that direction at all? You say this is a "burnished brass" color, so without photos of the fixure, it's hard for us to tell what color direction the fixture is leaning, and in turn, what would go with it.

Have you tried Google Sketchup? It is available for download free online and there is a "3d warehouse" with hundreds of thousands of pre-modeled pieces of furniture which should provide enough options to at least get you close.

I hope you find someone local to help you pull it all together. Right off the top of my head I see that you will want to make that small angled closet off the kitchen a pantry. And you will be better off flipping the living room layout so TV is on opposite wall they are currently showing (and that weird corner nook could be built ins to clean up that architecture). I think you will need to call a few ID s and hopefully get at least 2 to come to your home or book an appointment so you can get some feel for who you could work with. In my experiance as a designer not every designer and every client hit it off .To me the 2 styles are close in asthetics so maybe find some pics of what you love to use to give a designer some clue as to what you think those styles are . I once had a clent who stted she loved contemporary but as we began to work together that was not at all what she liked she was a much more traditional lover with maybe a touch of modern so I guess I learned a lesson early on that clients are not always aware of the style they like.

I found a local designer on Houzz who worked hourly. She helped me finalize materials and paint colors for my kitchen and bath in 2 hours ($500 total). I had inspiration pics and a loose plan but wasn't confident on putting it all together and got major cold feet before placing $$$ cabinet order. I think she was able to help me on short(ish) notice because I had samples and ideas, and she just had to show up for the appointment and help me pick which 1 of 4 tiles, 3 cabinet colors, etc.

Anyways, agree to talk to people you know on recommendations, read reviews on Houzz/Yelp. My advice is to also do as much of your own homework to save time and money. Then you don't have to wait for/pay the designer to help you figure out what your style is, get material samples, etc.
