Bad news with the frozen stocktanks......
Comments (46)Catherine, you are a very nice person to be able to respond to Catfish without losing your temper. He is not a nice person. He is rude and always looking for a fight. I have never seen him post on any thread without being insulting to someone. He cannot understand that because of that behavior, no one listens to him except other rude jerks. The only thing to be done is to complain to GW monitors and get him warned and then kicked out when he continues his diatribes. You can get a heat gun at Harbor Freight fairly cheap if you won't be using it a lot. They go on sale frequently. They cut out when they get too hot so don't be surprised that they need a rest in the middle of your repair. The more expensive ones do it as well. I have one of the Harbor Freight ones and a more expensive one and when one dies I just turn on the other. You may have a problem getting the crack cleaned out enough for any product to work. Let us know how your attempts work. Does the crack go all the way around the bottom? I have the same type of tank you do and I left the water in it all winter but it did not crack although I expected it to. I am wondering if it did not because I left the quilt batting on top. When I did pull the plug there was only a small amount of water left in it. Curious. Sandy...See MoreWeird worm in my lotus bog
Comments (12)I will forever be grossed out by the horsehair worm but it shocks me to see an expanded discussion of roundworms as nematodes.I knew there were beneficial and not so beneficial nematodes in the soil and I knew there were roundworm eggs in the soil from feces of infected animals and I have seen roundworms being expelled from an infected puppy back when it was not common to treat pets automatically for the parasite. Somehow I never thought of them as related. Cathy, don't even joke about having the parasite yourself. While it mostly lives in the gut of animals it can migrate through the bloodstream into the lungs, liver, heart and brain where it can kill you if it doesn't make you blind or crazy first. The Feds say that trichinosis is gone so we can eat our pork pink now but I remember the horror stories too well to ever eat it any way but well done. I was taught that it was the basis for the prohibition from eating pork for Jews and Muslims. Most of those dietary laws were there for good reason. I also remember my parents being very reluctant to allow me to swim in a public pool when they were first becoming popular. They knew parasites could enter through any mucous membrane and the combination of intestinal worms and Polio made the super saturation with chlorine quite popular for hot, sweaty kids. If my swim suit didn't fade drastically and start coming apart then there must not have been enough chlorine to their thinking. Would you believe that it was once common for women who wanted to be fashionably thin to deliberately infect themselves with roundworms?!? That goes along with the arsenic in the face powder to make them fashionably pale and other horrors of the history of womanly beauty. Now I have made myself paranoid and I will be wearing latex gloves 24/7. Sandy...See MoreTropicbreezent.....fertilizing a lotus bog
Comments (2)I don't get around here that much these days since there's very little activity. Fortunately today I decided to take a look. I think one of the problems with Lotus in containers is that the water in the soil stagnates and develops a high build up of minerals. In nature water moves through the soil so there wouldn't be that effect. If you were able to pump all the water out (that within the soil as well) it could then be replaced with fresh water. When you see Lotus in nature they grow in massive clumps, usually very densely. They're only restricted by deep water and solid ground. Everything in between they rapidly fill up. Being root bound would be a natural state for them. The fertiliser I use for the Lotus is a 20-4-4-2+TE 21 gram tablet, mainly used for trees (or generally large plants). I put in 6 of those tablets when I fertilise. Lotus is the sort of plant that's easy to grow but difficult to keep in good condition....See MoreTaking a tuber or 2 from a 300 gallon stock tank lotus bog
Comments (1)You can try but if it has a lot of tubers interwoven it will be hard to remove one without damaging it and they don't like to be injured. You might have to sacrifice a few to get a perfect one. Can you flood the tank every other day to rejuvenate the water? I wish you luck. They are beautiful....See Moretropicbreezent
