Compare to native goldenrods/Solidago spp. that are native to your area. One that grows here that resembles yours is Solidago gigantea, smooth goldenrod, but since we don’t know your location I don’t know if that is likely in your area.

I think it's golden rod also.

It is related to horseweed,(Erigeron). Same family,(Asteraceae), and same tribe, ( Astereae).

It will get flowers in late summer/fall.

Thanks all! This is growing at my home in West Newbury, MA. I think it's pretty common around here but I never looked closely at the plant before it flowered before. I'll probably let some of it grow if it doesn't interfere with the other plants around it. We bought a new home and are discovering the perennials that came with it as they come up!

It will spread both by runners and by seed. You will want to deadhead it in the fall before it goes to seed. I leave it in the field, but remove it from the gardens since it is fairly aggressive.
