Advice needed, What to do with walls after wallpaper removal?

Hello everyone! I need ideas. We are doing bathroom renovation in 2 bathrooms. Our renovation includes everything but the walls themselves. We just completed 1 bathroom and are about to start on #2. Both bathrooms had awful wallpaper, which was removed. Bathroom #1 now has beadboard walls (see picture). We want bathroom #2 to be different, but having trouble deciding what to do with the walls. We are on a budget, as we have more renovations to do on this house. Any advice? We don't want to go back with wallpaper and sheetrock isn't an option. Thanks in advance. Any pictures would also be appreciated. We still have to finish painting the bathroom in the picture, but I just wanted to give an idea of what we have already done.

Yes, you should try to remove as much glue residue as you can, which really shouldn't be hard if the walls are plaster. I like to use a green scrubbie pad to loosen the glue and then a couple rinses with water. You should use Gardz as a primer which will lock down any residual paste that you may have missed.

Can GARDZ or KILZ be used over the old paper and then can we paint? If you want to go over what is there use GardZ not Kilz,just be sure to get off as much paste as possible first.

Fenway, the problem with the odors may have to do with the application of the shellac. How was it applied? Did you use two full coats of shellac before you painted? I don't think Gardz is meant to seal odors. It is great for a lot of problem surfaces but odor sealing is not one of them. That said, if you need it for sealing down wallpaper adhesive, etc., Menard's has it in the store, if you have a Menard's close by. (I've found that Gardz is great for sealing the gypsum in drywall in problem spots where the paper is torn away. It penetrates and hardens the gypsum so fresh mud has no problem sticking.)
