Christophern -- the house ain't that old but I am certain they glued around an un-moulded archway (maybe just to patch)! Snookums2 -- I have some Dynaflex 230 from my Garage Makeover and I will use that inside. I was looking for a recommendation on that too -- so thanks! If all goes well, I should have a paint-brush in hand by Saturday morning. :)

I just had to use a steamer to get the wallpaper off because the people who hung the wallpaper didn't size. The guy at the paint store recommended putting an oil based stain blocker on the walls then painting w a latex paint...I guess based on brushworks comment it's a little late for this. :((((((

This is so FUNNY in not a ha ha way. Here I am four years later actually getting to the job. One wall done--paper off. At the moment I am washing, washing, washing to get the Diff and glue off the wall. DD#2 moves otu this weekend adn then we can remove furniture from the room I am working in and I will get to the other walls. I did use a tiger..to get water to the paper layer. I have never had a problem with it. I really was hoping to not have to do this in two steps..first the vinyl then the paper backing. I obviously forgot the advise from the experts that was offered. I will try on the next wall but I will have to try and pull the vinyl from the bottom up as there is a boarder that is glued down TIGHT. The elbow grease it takes to get the glue off is insane. Where is the miracle product that just dissolves it? I am using vinegar and water, trying to avoid the TSP. Well back at it. Thanks for checking back in!!

Sanding latex paint is a futile attempt at smoothing. Better to skim coat a little drywall compound over the area and then sand with a sanding block. After sanding , run a well dampened block sponge along the area where the patching meets the old wall area. This will get rid of an minor ridge of compound. You will want to prime this new patch, but use an old, worn roller in order to impart a slight texture, as your new patch will probably be noticeably smoother than the old roller texture on the wall. Further, I would give the new patch a quick, light coat of the finish coat paint, followed by a general painting of the room. Should a "flashing" of the patch still be visible, you may be forced to apply a second general finish coat.
