Leather sofas..yay or nay?
Comments (30)When my kids were young I stopped inviting mothers over who fed their kids in my family room. I thought that was the rudest thing ever. Plus, I donâÂÂt get why feeding kids snacks all the time is necessary. WhatâÂÂs up with that? It would take me lots of precious time cleaning food off the floor, area rugs, slider doors, walls ,furniture and the TV area. Granted kids seem to get stuff stuck on their person which can transfer to fabrics so I do understand the wish to find easy to maintain furnishings. Non-bonded leather is pretty hardy and easy to clean, plus, you can get away with lighter colors. When my kids became older teens we did have Chinese takeout on the coffee table and movie nights once or twice a month. They were old enough to be mindful by then. I do not get the comment that people who wish to teach their children to respect furnishings have their priorities skewed. Furnishings are expensive. Some of us do not have the funds to replace it all the time. Plus, I just wanted to teach my kids to get along better in society when grown. They are some things learned that will benefit them in the future, likeâ¦donâÂÂt scratch your butt in public, donâÂÂt pick your nose, donâÂÂt spit in public, donâÂÂt blow gas in public, donâÂÂt destroy others property or furnishings and take care of your personal things so they will last ect⦠ItâÂÂs all just such basic stuff that IâÂÂm having a hard time fathoming that some parents are against it. I know IâÂÂm probably coming across as one of those types that preach on how to raise kids but really this is all just the basics....See MoreStair runners -- yay or nay?
Comments (31)When we purchased our home we had all the floors refinished and I thought I'd leave the stairs bare. That lasted a few months when I began to notice tiny little scratches on the oak. In 32 years we've only had 2 runners on the staircase. We replaced the first when we redecorated. It was about 20 years old and there was very little sign of wear or dirt. It was a good carpet - an Axminster wool with a small pattern. I don't like our current runner nearly as well since it's solid. As for Pledge on the stairs .....one year after returning from a long road trip DH thought he'd surprise me by having my Suburban detailed. It did look great but they applied Armour All to the running boards which not only made them shiny but slippery too. I didn't realize it until I stepped up and then promptly slid off. Glad you had the bannisters to grab - I banged my shin on the edge of the running board and had a nasty looking bruise for a week or two. I think you'll like having the carpeted stairs....See MoreArea rugs? Yay or nay?
Comments (12)I love your floors! I have dust allergies and cleaning a rug beneath a bed is difficult, therefore -- I have wood floors (and tile) throughout my house. I have a large 9x12 wool rug in my guest bedroom (for a queen size bed) -- but, only because it was in my dining room in my previous home and was expensive enough that I didn't want to part with it. In my master bedroom, I have a rug on the floor at the foot of my king bed. It may break decorating rules, but the only reason I have any rug in my bedroom is because my poodle can't jump off the bed onto the hardwood without sliding. It's a safety issue for her. In a warm climate (like yours), I don't see the need for rugs. But, if you want to warm it up, the Pro from Ethan Allen has given good visual decorating tips....See Moretrash compactor in new build - yay or nay?
Comments (41)What is your goal in getting a trash compactor? I assume it's to take the trash out less often. Neither of us minds taking out the trash, but -- for reasons that make no sense -- we both HATE taking out the recycling. Not logical, I know. Towards this end, I'm considering putting in a recycling chute between the mudroom and the garage. Something like this (though the images show such a thing between the kitchen and the garage: This in no way "compacts" your recycling, but it puts it directly outside to the cans. One last thought: Aren't bags for compactors expensive? I personally don't care to add expensive must-haves to my household budget....See Moremishaf01
