What is your favorite color combination for plants?
Comments (9)My color scheme is always the same; pink, purple, blue, & white. My workhorse plants are always foliage-focused; persian shield, coleus, caladiums. For flowers, whatever grabs my eye, available seeds, wish I could find some heliotrope here. I also like to have some spots of red here'n'there. Occasionally a yellow flower sneaks in, but not usually unless they are sunflowers or pansies. I LOVE the combo of dark purple & pumpkin orange but I never garden with enough forethought to actually do an area of this. I think this combo needs to stand alone or not be at all. I also love purple & silvery blue. Like campanula & cabbage. Comments (4)From a designer's perspective, the best plant combinations involve a careful balance of contrasting and complimentary features. The 'contrast' part typically involves the use of plant shapes and foliage textures while the 'complimentary' aspect generally relates to colors as well as sharing similar growing conditions. In the combination above, the bold, heavy texture of the hydrangea foliage is offset by the lacier, more delicate Actaea foliage. You also have the spreading mass of the hydrangea in contrast to the more upright, clumping form of the Actaea. The grass (Carex) adds still another form and textural contrast, while the smaller, rounder and spreading form of the heuchera or epimedium provides yet another textural effect. The hosta in tj's example does the same. Much of the complimentary effect comes into play with the colors involved.......the deep maroon of the Actaea foliage compliments the deep green of the hydrangea and will accent the hydrangea as begins to turn into its fall colors. The heuchera picks up both of these colors, as does the painted fern or the epimedium as it puts out its new spring growth. And of course, all these plants enjoy similar growing conditions as well. Because flowers are such a transitory aspect of a garden design, I tend to place less emphasis on combining specific flower types than I do on the foliage, but the above plants do offer a very nice combined flowering effect as well - the shape of the hydrangea blossoms is somewhat repeated in the spikes of the Actaea, plus the coloring of the coloring of the hydrangea flowers as they age will pick up the pinkish tones of the Actaea as well. And the heuchera or epimedium will offer an early and very delicate flower effect, repeated later by the hostas. IMO, the best combinations involve at least three different plants and often, more. Comments (24)In_the_garden, this little bed is in full shade. It gets a tiny bit of dappled morning sun in early spring, and it is somewhat bright shade, (the sun hits that sidewalk that's visible for an hour or so) but otherwise the sun never touches that spot. The soil is also not so great, but I've been working on that. This combination was pretty much pure accident. I don't feel the photo shows how really good the digitalis looks with this hosta, but I really love the Regal Splendor. Comments (32)Zyperis, just call me Serena, that is my real life name... I'm a very prissy kind of girl, and Ser makes me feel like a macho drill sergeant, like Yessir! LOL! If Serena is too long to type you can call me KG, which Boxofrox has been calling me-Kansas Girl, as he put it "Yo--Kansas Girl". I would post photos of them side by side, but Gemini and Fragrant Cloud right now are "sleeping", I have to wait for both to start their full flush, just seeing 2 blossoms on each would look very silly especially if the 2 on my Gemini are already fading and the third bloom was deadheaded day before yesterday-- it would make a pretty awful photo. As soon as both get their full prolific bloom flush, I will post them together...Fragrant Cloud is truly a rose that people either love or absolutely hate! It's not like Gemini... You cannot go wrong with Gemini... It has exhibition quality gorgeous blooms...Fragrant Cloud is a beginner's rose because it is sooooo easy to grow and has great fragrance but man! its colors are indeed overwhelming and overpowering...Decobug like me has enjoyed success with it in certain color combinations, but you are playing with fire. If anyone is thinking FC, you better run to the nursery just to be sure you can handle her (she is a Spanish scarlet hue-think flamenco orange-red)...Gemini is the complete opposite...It is a rose to fall in love with. It goes with practically anything under the sun...There is only one catch with Gemini, if you are very! picky about fragrance like I am, be sure you get a fragrant version of Gemini...Usually Gemini have little scent...I lucked out in mine (Jackson & Perkins) having this very sweet lovely fragrance....See MoreFun2BHere
