Sherry, No, we never prune it with hedge trimmers; we prune it in the "official" rose way, with Felcos. Yes, we use the cuttings for rootstocks. We often cleft-graft onto unrooted cuttings, and let the grafts heal in the mist, while roots form, and we also do a lot of chip budding, onto already rooted Fort plants. Both methods work well. I've never grown it up a tree, but have seen beautiful, huge specimens in live oaks in other people's gardens. Malcolm

OMG! When I viewed the second photo, I gave a huge sigh of relief -- almost as though I was able to exhale for the first time in memory. This is the only time, I'm sure, that I've ever identified in a very personal way with a structure. Definitely the wrong rose for that site. Lovely house, apparently lovely setting. If I lived there, I'd do whatever I could to ensure that it doesn't rejuvenate.

My experience with Dr Huey in my dry sandy soil is that the plants get stressed much more easily than those on fort. They also get more trouble with Nematodes which greatly reduces flower production. If you have a nice water retentive soil I am sure Dr Huey can do very well as well. But in my area where there is water restriction and there is no rain at all for the three months of summer, sometimes even longer, the roses on Dr Huey are not productive in the really hot months and they need much more water to show vigour. That's why I SP'd all of them, and I had quite a few to begin with as I was attracted to their cheap price. The ones on Dr Huey didn't die when it was hot and dry but they just sat there and did nothing until the rain came. I am not very patient and I need my plants to produce flowers all the time in order to keep me happy.

A friend gave this to me as Fortuniana rootstock. I'm not sure if it fits the typical description. Are there different variants of this rose? I read somewhere there are some bred that are nearly thornless. If it's not Fortuniana, what roostock is it? He dug this up as a sucker from one of his roses.

I would guess yes. It looks very much like the suckers I get from my fortuniana grafted roses

Sorry, I posted a description of the rose but that did not go through. Here it is:

1. I should have taken a pic of the flowers but it's too late. it is once blooming. Flowers are white but some pinkish blush in the middle. Center of flowers is muddled and there is no button eye.

2. Leaves are not glossy and not particularly elongated as you can see in the picture

3. It does have thorns

4. Not as easy to root as Dr. Huey or Manetti

5. When budded, the bud does not grow easily like Dr. H or Manetti

Ben's comment is reassuring since I didn't think the leaves fit the typical description or picture. Thoughts from anyone else ?
