preventing weeds in flagstone path

i am getting ready to replace a years old, weed infested gravel path on one side of my house. i have reviewed a number of online how tos. i will be using about 2" thick flagstone, with gravel in between. I will have fairly wide spaces between the stones. Based on the # of stones i have probably about 2". I plan to put down a weed barrier fabric (or maybe cardboard, as that was suggested), then a layer of sand, then the stones. As the subject of this post suggests, i am trying to determine how to prevent weeds from between the stones. While some are likely inevitable, I would like to do as much as I can to minimize. I have read that the gravel in fill between the stones should be 1/2 minus. But I have been warned that the minus part, once compacted, provides a medium for weed roots to take hold. And with sand under the gravel, there is already a base for weed roots.

What have others done? Should I just go with 1/4 or 1/2" clean instead of minus?

With that sort of spacing between the flags, you cannot prevent weeds - they will be inevitable with anything that is windblown or dropped by birds. But you have gone about as far as you can go to minimize them with the landscape fabric (this is a situation where I would recommend the fabric over any cardboard!!) and a proper compacted sand base. Weeds are well able to root and grow in gravel so I doubt the size of the gravel will have much bearing - IME, they can pop up just as easily in 1/4" minus as they can in 5/8" minus. They just are easier to remove from the larger rock :-)

I agree. The only thing that helps a little is to put your flagstones more closely together if you can. I find a torch or a kettle of boiling water takes care of the weeds that pop up in my gravel and flagstone paths.

a path needs to be wide enough to function, - say to be able to roll a garden cart, or a wheel barrow, or the trash cans down it. yours manages that handily Â and when you say Â4-5 feetÂ I take it you mean that the path has an organic (ie not ruler-straight) layout, so a person coming down the path can step out of your way without having to stand on the hostas, which is a nice feature. The path, I think, looks ÂfatÂ because the space is long and fairly narrow Â and itÂs bare. Nothing has crept over the corners yet, thereÂs no hensbane colonizing things, no striped hostas leaning over the stones, no ferns leaning over the hostasÂ I would say that you have planned well, in leaving humans a fair swath down the center of what will be a dense little jungle in a few short years Â it will save you from having to keep pushing the plants back ever year, lest the overrun things. And trust me Â they will.

Some people use thyme between the stones in a path. I just posted a similar question in the herb forum asking if thyme would cover the rocks in a new part of my path. The rocks in my path are aobut 8-12 inches in diameter with about an inch in between. I was told by the herb folks that the thyme would cover my stones, but maybe your stones are larger and you don't mind them partially covered. I've been told that Elfin Thyme is the smallest. I used moss between the stones on the part of my path I built a couple years ago. I don't think that will work on the new part because a lot of it is in full sun. 'Georgia Blue' Veronica ped... is lovely in all seasons of the year here & for me grows about 8" tall flopping a bit. It doesn't like to dry out, but it does like good drainage, so not sure if it would work for your area. Thymes are excellent, but need to be carefully weeded until established into a carpet. Takes precision fingers to do it, but it can be done. The dense top holds a bit of moisture & I find weeds germinating right inside it, but they're easy to pull. The bird seed might be the source of those weeds...

I have mazus around a stepping stone path too. I have had it for about five years now. It is wonderful. It's evergreen, and stays very low, especially after blooming. It makes a very tight mat that keeps 99 percent of the weeds out. It will take some sun as long as it never ever dries out. If it gets dry, it will go dormant or die. My well established areas seem to go dormant until the weather cools and the rain returns. Once each year, I have to take my clippers and cut it away from the stones. When it has its big growth spurt in the spring it will spread right across the pavers. One trim a year takes care of it. Since I don't want it in my planting beds, I also trim it back from them each year (but only once is needed). I keep thinking I will put in some edging to stop it....

thanks for both of your comments. i will probably go with the weed block fabric. it just isn't a long pathway (about 25-30') and I would prefer not to buy a full roll just for that. Plus cardboard is readily available and has a 'recycling' component to it. But I also know it will degrade over time where the fabric won't. and yes, i know i won't prevent - just trying to minimize. But i am thinking of putting in clean rocks instead of any with 'minus' in it, figuring that any weeds that do root in the clean might be easier to pull out.

I also found one site that said the boiling water kills only the leaves, not the root. I will probably try it tho, along with weed b gone and maybe preen in the spring.
