Rules that govern the right width for a flagstone path?

Are there rules for the width of a path, relative to the size of space it is going through?

It is always nice to have a wide path for two people, but when does the path look better smaller?

If the width of space between house and edge of property is narrow, should the path be narrower so it is in proper proportion? Or would a wider path make the space feel bigger?

If the planting on either side of the path is done with tall plants should the path be wider?

I put a flagstone path down the side of my house. The path is 4-5 ft wide going through a space that varies from 10 - 20 ft wide. The planting will be a shade garden, a mix of short and tall plants. It is not yet planted, and right now the path seems too wide for the space. I suspect that once it is full of plants, it will look more in scale, but I'd prefer to make changes now if needed.

The path size rules I've seen deal with width requirements based on # of people, but they never discuss the size of area they are going through.
