Off With Their Heads

Last year I bought 2 beautiful echeveria. I even managed to keep them alive over the winter, but they did etoliate quite a bit. About 10 days ago I beheaded them (and removed their pups) and potted them up in a better mix. Then I put the remaining stems in a partly shady area. The stems have rewarded me by pupping like crazy!

I hate the new site. I cannot post to cacti and succulents from my phone, and my photos are only on my phone. I had to start the post from my PC to get it in the C&S Forum, and since I can't edit a post from my phone, I have to comment to add the photos.

Probably to restrict data.... anyway, i planted a pulidonis head, the base seems to have been eaten...

I've grown globemaster and purple sensation. I did not cut the heads down last year (my first year for both) becuase I, too, like the structure. However, none of my 3 globemasters came back this year (bummer at $7 a pop) and I definitely lost some of the purple sensation. I'm thinking it may be because I allowed them to go to seed rather than save their energy for blooming the next year. Just my thoughts and experience...

Thanks all, for the suggestions. Sue- you made my yard look so beautiful with the photoshop! I love your idea of the swing and structure (with roses, of course) but I think my husband might kill me if I put in another little patio (we have three, and I am busy building the fourth already). Gobluedjm, you know that I adore weeping bottlebrush. That is at the top of my list for a small tree, but the pepper is weeping right there, so I'm not sure it would work. Maybe it would look even prettier- I may do that. I also love aloes. But I don't see an aloe in that spot, not with little white daisies, larkspur, and irises crowding all around. Well, I can see it, because I do have some aloes in that situation, but mine are small. I saw a photo on the OGR forum? of a climbing rose grown up a post and through a wagon-wheel or something similar, and it cascaded back down in the most wonderful way. I guess that's what I had in the back of my mind. Or- dare I say it- how about Iceberg roses? Finally, does anyone have any experience with small upright junipery things? I'm thinking of three small juniper spires at different heights on one edge. Renee

Frank, I'm in northern Florida. So they'll be slowing down a little but not too much, and honestly, I'm scared to cut them - more than I'm scared of losing them. The #1 plant was my first chubby - started my addiction to succulents. Amazed it's still alive! I can definitely cut the Superbum - I have a spare of that, and the Debbie has a little pup of her own, so if I mess it up, I'm covered. Rina - it is a PvN, just a funny angle and my camera lens distorted her a bit. Rarely look at the underside of them. :)

Rina, #1 was ID'd here as a Shiviana (sp?) here last year, and #2 is a Topsy Turvy.

The pics below are last summer when I purchased them.

The more things 'improve' the worse they get. Typical corporate garbage. 'Of course they will like it', because we like it and it makes us more $!
