Why is my Japanese Umbrella Pine Wilting?

Hi there, I planted a Japan Umbrella Pine about 3 weeks ago. I planted it in rich organic material along with some peat moss. The tree started to wilt and is looking quite awful. What did I do wrong? I’ve never had this happen!

how big is it...

how did you plant it.. beyond the sparse facts you gave ...

whats your native soil ... does it drain ... how have you been watering ...

compare your process with the info at this link ..

what does you seller suggest ... if other than bigbox..... ken

Hi ken, yes I know how to plant a tree ha ha ha. The soil is pretty good. It’s in a mounded bed as per photo. Tree came from a reputable nursery. Planted it 3 weeks ago. Weather in Toronto was unseasonably cold last week. Warmed up now. Fine for about a week then it started to wilt. The pic attached is from a few days ago. It looks worse now. Stuck my finger in the soil and it’s damp. Not soaking, just a perfect dampness.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I trimmed the branches as directed and I moved them to shade. I had a neighboring landscaper replant the trees under the shaded area this morning. They did a great job and finished off the job with mulch and placed burlap over the trees to help protect them from burning. This landscaper had driven by property over the weekend and saw that I had these trees in the drums and thought to himselfÂ"Those trees are going to die, if not already dead." However, he informed me this morning that he was happier with the condition of the trees and root system, then what he anticipated. The next several days are vital and I need to spray the leaves often throughout the day, but he feels that these trees are going to make it. He charged me a $100 bucks and was here with 2 other workers for almost 2 hours. What a great price and he now has a customer that will by future trees from him. He stated that the trees were worth $500 - $600 a piece. I told him about this forum and he was glad that I took the advice to plant them in the ground. He will move them again for me next March. A ex-neighbor of mine has what I swear is a Japanese umbrella pine but it's not conical at all. It's about 4-5' tall and about 6' wide and very open -- not dense at all. I find it quite beautiful and would love to replicate it in my garden. It must be heavily pruned but when I questioned the owner about it she seemed totally clueless. She's the only person I've seen tending the yard so I'm pretty sure she doesn't have someone else pruning and training the specimen. I was told at one garden center that there are both tree and shrub versions of the Japanese Umbrella Pine but I can find no evidence of this in my online searching. I've moved away from the neighborhood but if I ever get back there I will take a photo and post it. I would appreciate any information that might help me identify this shrub on the chance that it is not an umbrella pine.

Greetings,(umbrella) I can think of another reason if more water doesn't work. You mention that its in cement, how new is the cement? Is there a cement grout in the brick work? the cement could be combining with any fertilizers that you use on it, if you increased the fertilizer because it was wilting, it would wilt more if this is the cause. The lime in the cements can cause a chemical burn to the roots if the fertilizer mixes with it. Thats why we never fertilize and spread lime at the same time! I'd say stop any fertilizers (even organic) and increase the watering, by soaking the roots down deep, to see if that helps.Moonflowers do wilt some but always seem less wilty when the rains satisfy them. I don't know when it was originally planted (more than 3 years ago) but we moved it a couple months ago. It's had an orange appearance for as long as we've been here, just not quite this severe. Our soil is mostly sand and drains very quickly so I'm pretty sure it wasn't getting enough water. Even though it's been well watered since we moved it the stress of moving might have been too much. I think an Umbrella Pine was the wrong plant for our soil to begin with. I hate to give up on a plant if there's the slightest chance it will survive, but this looks like a lost cause.

Since it looks terrible, I actually dug it out to let it dry out a bit. I had a feeling it may be a little dry. I will replant it tomorrow once it has dried a bit. It wasn't soaking when I removed it, but I fear it may be rotting... I am so distraught about it! It was the nurseries last one!

I think it looks like this for the same reason [THIS[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/why-is-the-new-growth-on-my-japanese-umbrella-pine-wilting-dsvw-vd~4717272) poster lost an U. Pine. In both cases there was a lot of soft growth. Consider what happens to a water sprinkler when a car runs over the hose it is connected to. Add to this the "one size fits all" advice of barerooting when transplanting and you have a failure.

My suggestion in the future is to transplant your tree or shrub before it leafs out or at the very least let the new growth harden off.

I would say its undergoing a transplant shock. Don't overwater and watch the soil. Not much to do now but to observe. Usually the bigger the plant, the more susceptible they can be to transplant shock. Its possible the roots got damaged when you set it in the soil. My practice is to provide water to the plant hours before a transplant. That is to sustain it while its healing.

What I expect will happen now is that your tree will get some die backs and lose leaves or branches even. But for as long as the trunk is alive, it is okay.

Do not ever fertilize a newly transplanted plant. It does not need fertilizers and fertilizers can even cause damage to the tree.

If it's in full sun, I would try to shade it! These are generally not inexpensive trees and are worth keeping.

Update, the whole tree browned up. 100% dead! Very sad!
