Name That Plant!

Can you ID this wild flower?

I was in far Northern CA. This small what looks like a wild flower was growing on the bank next to a road, carpeting the area with a blanket of blooms. The

about 10 feet high and 30 feet wide. This area was once way more populated because of the Gold Rush, and there are many naturalized plants here left over from domestic plantings, which this may be, I don't know. Can anyone tell me what this is? Here is a close up pic:

Thank you! The petals do not look the same, but maybe that has to do with the weather, or something. Everything else jibes. I appreciate your response

Taxonomically I would agree that ours could be regarded as var. americanum and European stock as var. opulus. Unfortunately varietal status is sometimes seen as not being ecologically significant by the laymen. I lament to have never seen our native Highbush Cranberry in the wild, and I have examined dozens of plants in NY and IL. There are some really nice compact cultivars available and most seem to have palatable, albeit rather sour, fruit. The typical var. opulus has horrendously bitter fruit. I am curious if the same holds true for our native plants, but won't know until I find one.

Maybe another species? multiflorum? For some reason I cannot direct link to Calscape so you will have to search the species.

Do you have any closeups? Or even crop one of the pictures to a closeup before uploading (which reduces resolution). Here’s D capitatum blooming in southern oregon two weeks ago.

They seem to have to looser head of multiforum, but unfortunately, the flowers are not easy to see in the OP.
