Eastern Black Swallowtail Cats Question
Comments (3)BST's done really have a time table that they stick to, at least in my back yard. I had a bunch pupate 2 years ago (in June & July I believe) and none of them eclosed that year; they all overwintered! Last year I had quite a bit pupate and eclose within weeks. If you're going to be away, your best bet would be to either leave the chrysalid outside and somewhat protected from predators. If it does eclose, at least it will be on it's way and not confined. Or leave it with someone you trust. How are you raising your cats; in a cage or individual containers? Full plant or feeding them as they need? I have a butterfly cage on my deck. I put the potted plants inside and let the cats do their thing, eat, pupate & eclose. If I go away on vacation, I have someone to water the plants and release any possible eclosures......See MoreBlack Swallowtail Cats Dying out of Egg!
Comments (2)I agree - sounds like the "safe" insecticide used to fog for mosquitoes - it interferes with digestion and affected insects starve to death :( The exact same thing happened to a dozen eggs I got from my neighbor's plants. The eggs from my plants were not affected, and the cats are munching away. The difference is that her plants are on the side of her house towards the front, and my plants are in the back yard. The fog generally doesn't reach beyond the front yards in my experience. To be safe, I also cover my plants with an old sheet every Thursday evening when the fogging truck is due. I'm working on getting them to stop spraying my property, and hopefully I can get the neighbors on board so they will stop spraying the whole street. It has little overall impact on mosquitoes, and kills beneficial insects....See MoreEastern Black Swallowtails - cats dying
Comments (2)Are you sure these plants were organic--no pesticides? I had some people I know who purchased some parsley at a local nursery and they had been sprayed. You'd think that people would prefer organic herbs, but many nurseries don't want their plants getting eaten by caterpillars--so they spray them....See MoreCaterpillar id needed, black swallowtail cat maybe??
Comments (5)Yeah the GST does not have those little nubs sticking out at this stage, nor does it have such "spotty" markings. Funny runmede that you mention that BSTs can use citrus. I read somewhere that "sometimes they use citrus" - somewhere besides the above post, I mean. And the other day I'd been out and picked up a few teeny BST cats on a couple tiny sprigs of dill, and three or so GST eggs, attached to small pieces of citrus leaves. All I had was one water bottle so put the whole lot in there. Well later on when I realized "hey I need to get those cats out of the water bottle!" - I could've sworn the orange leaves that had been in there had been much bigger. And there were no GST cats, just eggs in there. But I KNOW BSTs don't eat citrus. Well anyway I'm not sure but I could swear there was much more to the citrus leaves with the GST eggs attached. Was I crazy or did the BSTs eat it? Maybe something to try again another time and see what happens, this time actually paying attention to the leaves and cats. Always something! kelly...See Morejaviwa
