Black Swallowtail Cats Dying out of Egg!

Dear Buttlerfly Friends--

I have a problem that I never encountered before with swallowtail eggs. I collected my first 10 eggs from a garden where I had planted a big bunch of fennel. I was looking forward to have them all hatch (as in the years before).

To my horror, every single tiny cat practically died right after emerging from the egg. I noticed at first that none of the hatchlings ate their egg shell. After a few hours every one fell off the plant. I was not able to "reattach" them back to the plant, although I tried (some of them still were alive for a while).

Has anyone encountered this before? Could it be a virus, or something else?

Narda
