Neither brand are much in the way of quailty. Do they offer anything else brand wise?

They didn't really. I am a bit concerned about the quality. I know Anderson 400 series is better, but he did say that would add to the cost about $6k.

Are there any other brads that your recommend that are less expensive than the 400, but better than the SilverLine?

Are you limited to what your builder can get ? Can you get windows from other places than be g box stores? There are many brands that should fall into this price range.Are the windows casements, double hungs or sliders?where is the project located?

Your builder chose two of the lowest quality windows in the vinyl industry. There are some very high quality vinyl windows out there but unfortunately your builder is not very aware of that fact.

There will be double hung, casements and a 12' double slider door. We are located in CT. I don't think we are limited to big box stores. It seems like if I find something that is a better option he is very open to using it, however it all depends on $$.

I wouldn't just avoid Jeld-Wen windows... I would run the other way. We had 38 of their "high end" windows that underwent massive seal failure at 16 years in. You can imagine the cost to replace them. Three different contractors told us that they won't even use Jeld- Wen windows in garages anymore. We live in a climate with cold winters and hot summers. The quality just isn't there for these conditions.

As you'll note from other pros commenting here, Andersen Silverline windows aren't a good product, and having a black exterior is only going to amplify their problems. Good vinyl solutions are either the Okna 800 or Vytex Potomac. Someone else mentioned Marvin Integrity. I'd suggest looking at their ALL Ultrex line. It's an all fiberglass window that will be available in your color schemes. Just remember, all of these solutions will cost more than Andersen Silverline, but it will be less costly than buying Silverline and then buying better windows down the road.

My wife and I are starting our home remodeling project. We are looking for black in and black out windows. We have a tight budget so we're trying to figure out the windows first before doing anything else. I am looking for a few recommendations. Not opposed to vinyl but my concerns are warping and fading black. We live in Los Angeles. Any thoughts?

It is rare to find a black in/out vinyl window. Maybe try some Marvin or Andersen products.

In your environment I would consider thermally-broken aluminum windows as an option as well.

What about black out and white in vinyl windows? I will also look into those suggestions. Thank you!
