updating a brick fireplace

What's the best way to update a brick fireplace? I would like to have stacked stone instead of brick. just not sure if we should remove the brick or put stone over it??? ( don't mind the baby toys around in the picture)

Depending on your budget for this project, I would recommend a dry stacked stone (real stone) veneer. Treat the fireplace for what it is, a special design element in your home which will serve as a backdrop for many family photos to come.

I agree covering the fireplace would be the easiest thing. Removing the brick would be a real pain and mess, and what if you ever decide you want it back?

I've been looking at that GenStone stuff at the store lately, it seems like a pretty good product.

If you are not going to use as a wood burning unit you can cover the vent with a fire retardant material such as sheet metal or just cover with Durock, see below. If you want anything to properly adhere to the brick it would be an option to screen it then scratch coat. I would just cover it with Durock cement board. Much less labour intensive.

There's so much you can do with your fireplace now, the finishes seem to be endless. I would look at the veneers, too, or any finish you want, really. I think real brick might look nice, but your room is so light, am wondering if the paint finish a bit more distressed to reveal some of the undertones of the brick might look nice. But veneers are great, would change your entire room.

Bobbie H, did you have to go back a couple of times to scrub off more of the limewash paint to bring out the brick more??? we just did the lime wash yesterday and it is drying more white and I"m thinking we need to to scrub off more. DId you just use rags? or did you use a wire brush or anything??

I think a big part of the problem is that the upper wall colour has a yellow undertone and the dark grey mantle has a blue undertone so they clash. When the bricks were in their natural state, they had a slight yellow undertone as well so you didn’t notice the clash so much, but the stark colour of the fireplace now really brings it into contrast. Plus the new grey of the fireplace is also on the blue side of the grey spectrum as it appears in the picture. Perhaps if you redid the fireplace in a shade a tiny bit darker than the walls it would work better.

We did this exact same thing - just stoned over brick, but my dad built out a frame slightly so the stone wasn't flat against the wall / looked weird and then put cement board on top to make putting the stone down easier
