tile mesh backing won't stick

The moment this mesh gets wet, it won't stick to the back of the tile any more. It has to stay stuck to get the tiles onto the backsplash with everything lined up and the spacing right on the intricate design. Contractor tried hot glue and epoxy resin. Now he's short on ideas. I need some idea of products or ways to get this mesh stuck on there in an entirely waterproof way. thanks

Comments (4)No real tricks that I can think of for the ceiling tiles. Depending on how floppy they are I set the edge of the sheet I'm installing next to the sheets that are already set, align it, then "roll" the rest of the sheet on to the ceiling. Give it a slight massage and you're on to the next sheet. If you do install wall tiles that tend to slip down the wall, it might help to set them slightly high, then slide them down to the desired spot. Sliding them down can sort of take away the ability for the tile to creep on its own. It can be thinset-dependent and tile-dependent though, but it's a technique that works. For me at least. Comments (55)It really does depend on market Our neighbor had a larger house on a small lot with high taxes because of the size. She really struggled to sell it and the buyers got a bargain. Not sure about now, but if they had sold it a year ago it could have been gone in a week. First the tax structure had changed so that her taxes were lowered because it is now based on market value so takes in the lot size which old structure did not. Plus our street has been repaved which makes it a lot better than it was. Also overall taxes in other areas have gone up more than ours so high taxess are not as big an issue This is just one example of how current circumstances do not translate into long term problems. Comments (11)I tried removing the mesh and the glue today, with various substances. (Searching for a solution is what got me here in the first place.) I needed a solution for completely cleaning the tiles, since I'll be gluing them with the back (the glued face) upwards. What worked best was plain old vinegar. It's not completely hassle free, but it's still (and by far) the easiest way to deal with the problem, of all things I tried. After a few hours of soaking the tile, while still sticking to the tile, the glue becomes non-adhesive and can be easily rubbed off with your fingers. I did it under water, so that the pieces of glue would quickly float away and the tile would get rinsed in the process too. Petrol-based thinner and acetone did nothing (except stink horribly). Dish washer detergent soaked it, but left it still somewhat sticky. Rubbing alcohol made it swollen and transparent - and also still sticky, and extremely goey. Boiling the tiles in water, or water with vinegar, softened the glue enough to make it removable, but only for as long as the tiles were still hot, and also left it sticky. With all methods but soaking in vinegar for a few hours I had to rub the tiles with an old toothbrush, while rubbing once or twice across with your fingers is enough for the tiles soaked a few hours in vinegar. You should be able to easily clean a few hundred tiles per hour, with this method. (Not that it is any fun, though.)...See MoreWell...crap. Backsplash won't line up.
Comments (23)Another idea...kind of like jterrilynn is suggesting, I think. I realized we had left out a 2.5" filler after our counters were in. I needed every last inch I could squeeze out of the open shelves above, but didn't want them to stick out past the counter. My contractor built this narrow cabinet that tucks under the counter overhang and is topped with butcherblock with slots for knives. Having the built in knife holder had occurred to me early in the kitchen planning but then just seemed like too much trouble, but it's turned out to be a great addition (and I think it covered the goof-up pretty well!) I also considered having a wine rack there, but I didn't have enough room. This is the best pic I have right now. Sorry-it was really taken to show the floor....See MoreKathy J
