Design Dilemma Flooring

can I have different color wood stains on the main floor?

We are updating a few things in our house (after some water damage in our kitchen). We originally had hardwood floors throughout the main floor (minus the foyer). We replaced the laundry/kitchen/bathroom with tile and we need to re-stain the den floor (which now touches tile). I want to stain it with a grey hue stain, but the office and dining room still have the dark honey stain. My husband insists we match the original color to keep everything consistent... I think it would be fine since the two entryway into the den are from tiled rooms (plus I hate the dark honey color). Would changing the color look weird, especially since the other two rooms match? My husband keeps focusing on resale value.

You don't NEED to match the stain color of the floors, as they are not adjoining - however, you should at least keep the floors in the same tone family. Grey and dark honey don't seem to fit. I have to agree with your husband on this one.

This is a very common question here on Houzz. There are several other threads already discussing this. Most designers will strongly suggest matching if at all possible.

I am happy to see this post. My son is buying a house that has a beautiful random width floor (maple?) in a medium tone all through the downstairs except in the living room. He will be replacing the old carpet in the LR, but was concerned about matching the wood. It only meets the wood floor in the entry way next to the steps. I suggested just trying to match the color, if not the species of wood, as he would much rather have wood throughout. I will be able to tell more about it Wednesday, when I tag along for inspection. Since it only meets in a small area, I'm hoping NOT doing random width would be acceptable.

The color difference may also help prevent falls as you will be better able to see where the stairs end & where the floor begins. I'm not kidding--I can't tell you how many people have missed the last 1 or 2 steps at my uncle's home because of the way the light shines on the stairs. A change in color would definitely help!

You can make the color change anywhere you want. In old houses I have seen, the first-floor flooring was carried up to the first landing (if it had one) or to the top of the stairs if it was a straight staircase. Then the lesser flooring took over. The objective was to make it look like the expensive stuff went all the way up. One house had three changes of flooring: something hardwood (walnut or cherry) on the first floor, which went up to where the staircase turned, then oak for the next floor where the main bedrooms were, then pine or cypress going up to the nursery and attics. The servant's staircase was pine all the way. The only house that had fancy all the way up also had a ballroom on the top floor ... can't have the guests stepping on pine!

We are having this dilemma in real time. they just stained the 1st floor of our 2013 built home. I wanted to refresh because the kids beat them up with scooters, etc when we first moved in and also the color ambered a lot over the years and was looking VERY orange... so we said let's just do the first floor since the 2nd is in relatively good shape but does have that more warm/amber tone. So now we have a custom blend downstairs going up the front stairs and the existing Early American on White Oak on the 2nd floor. See pics... I thought I could live with it, but now I'm 2nd guessing and wondering if we need to do the 2nd floor too... thoughts, photos welcome!

You can, but should you is the real question. If you have any plans to sell the different flooring can be an issue. Best to have same flooring through out the space if at all possible.
