Exterior Paint Advice - Flat or Satin
Comments (81)Good luck getting SW paint at the moment. They had one of their main plants in Texas go down during the February deep freeze and it apparently is still not up and running. They also got themselves into a disadvantageous contract to supply Lowes, which is biting them in the butt. So what did SW do? They raised their over priced paint once again! The whole paint industry is really disrupted at the moment. Fortunately, Behr is in relatively good shape as to production. They even came out with their new super premium Dynasty line this week. Super paint in the MId $50 range. Both SW and PPG have been in buy out the competition programs for the last couple decades. In retrospect, maybe they should have been paying better attention and investing in their own core operations....See MoreIs cabinet brand a big factor?
Comments (54)Plain and Fancy and Omega will be top tier quality, with the pricing that goes with it. Dynasty, Brookhaven. and Medallion are the next steps down and are upper mid grade lines. Dynasty gives a great bang for the buck and was often less expensive than Kemper in some things because of how they structured the alterations. Kemper is solidly mid grade and I did lots of nice projects in them when I sold them. Kraftmaid is the mid grade version of Merrilat, but beware, as they've splintered into about 3 different levels of quality and makes it horribly confusing. Their customer service also sucks. Aristokraft and Merrilat are builder grade. Few choices and not so great finishes. Great for a just married in an entry level house and low expectations, but even those kids have higher expectations these days. Apologies for the poor cell phone pics but there were no lights. Kemper kitchen. This section was right around 20K The other half of the kitchen, in Dynasty. It was around 38 K. This kitchen was big enough to be two kitchens. Each half could have been a total project....See MoreWOW FACTOR for exterior of house
Comments (27)@JDS. Yes, you're right, I do make recommendations/suggestions. But like any recommendation or proposal, you can take it or leave it. It's a recommendation, not a requirement. My show is for new builds primarily, but, to my surprise, house flippers and people who are remodeling have also been listening. I am definitely not a "pro" in general, as I admit on my "About Us" page, but based on the criteria of this forum, bloggers/podcasters can be considered pros (I emailed the Gardenweb administrators before I set up my profile to confirm). And finally, yes, the info on this site is free, as is the info on my site. I am not selling anything-- just teaching folks what I learn as I do research for my own future project....See MoreWhat can I do to give this red brick house the “wow factor”
Comments (8)Some things you could do are ... Widen the walk and especially the entrance landing. (The skimpy walk seriously cheapens the whole home, especially since the entrance is far from the drive.) If you redo the whole thing, consider if it needs to be a bit farther away from the garage -- at least 6' I think. Remove the center tree. It gives a goofy look to the garage wall. Hang a piece of outdoor art on the blank wall if it bothers you. Or, a wall mounted flag. Plant below windows as if it's a flower box .... color and annuals. With windows so low to the ground, it's not practical to have the typical shrub situation. Instead, some evergreen shrubs can go near corners of the garage. Incorporate a bed of groundcover in order to knit everything together. It is much more luxurious looking than a bed of mulch. Plant some medium height (3-4') colorful perennials to wrap the far corner. Limb up the front yard trees such that they do not impede view of first floor from the street. Limb up the small trees at the garage so they clear the window tops. Since they are very formal elements, keep their tops shaped and height in the vicinity of the eaves. There are probably other things you could do fore of the space that is shown. I see what I think is a mulch bed below the tree at left. This could be a sumptuous, lush bed of groundcover instead of a dry, flat, brown space....See Moreemillerslo
