What would you do if this was your kitchen?

Husband is building us shaker style kitchen cabinets (they’ll replace the janky peach ones pictured) in our 1930’s bungalow and I‘m torn on what to paint them. Shiplap was everywhere when we moved in and we are painting it alabaster. Our north facing kitchen is fairly dark except for a hour in the evening so dark colors are probably not going to work (even though I like the white and navy combo.)
Below are pics of our space plus the colors we have been decorating with throughout the house. Should we paint the cabinets colonnade gray to match the trim or go bold and do a two tone with base cabinets being either a navy or sw brocoflower green? Or something different altogether? Husband isn’t fond of more white cabinets and we are planning on doing a white silestone counter.
It’s a 13x14 space with no dining room so furniture has to stay however the rug can be replaced If something else would be better.
Go with Colonnade gray
Two tone with navy base
Two tone with brocoflower base
I’ve got a better idea that I’ll list below!

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI love the idea of green. I'm not sold on the particular shade, but a green of some sort would be delightful. How authentic are you planning to make it? This is a beautiful example of a green and cream and red kitchen.

If You Could Re-Do Your Garden Shed, What Would You Do Different?
Comments (8)Oh boy ... that's definitely a loaded question, but thank heavens my husband doesn't read these forums! I'd had it all planned out (the shed, that is), but it was not cost effective. Oh all right - $2000.00 IS a bit ridiculous, I suppose. We modified the design and took a few shortcuts to significantly drop the cost, got a few things from friends ("free" works for me!), and ended up w/ a really cool shed, inside & out. It's large enough to hold all of my garden tools/accessories/books/etc. Plenty of space to move around, lots of counter space for various tasks ... I actually spend quite a bit of time out there on the weekends, even in cold temps (propane heater). BUT ... the number one thing that I would do different is the roof. While corrugated tin LOOKS absolutely fantastic, rustic, etc., it doesn't hold heat worth a darn! Of course, I can't possibly say anything about it at this point - the shed is built, and I'M the idiot that fell in love w/ the overall look of a tin roof! *heavy sigh* Guess I shot myself in the foot, so to speak!...See MorePick my backsplash? Comments (17)i like what fern4 posted. it makes the subway tile a little more interesting. i still stand by my basketweave!!!! i think you need to decide how unique you want to make your kitchen. the subway tile (or marble subways which would be nice) will certainly look great and will be the classic white kitchen. if you want that look, than go for the subways. i liked the basketweave because it is still traditional but it is something you don't see often. i also don't think it will be too busy.....mine isnt' busy at all and it is not busier than the minibricks or glass mosaics out there. have you seen vic's kitchen..... white cabinets, costa esmerelda countertops (same as my kitchen) but she chose a terracotta patterned tile. i love how it makes her kitchen "hers"...... and it looks totally different than mine. i would say decide what look you are going for, and then make your decision, because all of the ideas sound great....it's just what you want the feel to be........See Moreneed some layout advice - WWYD???
Comments (12)OK - here are my measurememnts. They are in inches. To answer some of your quesitons: What is the extent of the remodel? Gut and redo? Basically gut - hopefully we can get rid of the soffits, no cabinets will remain. The only thing that is new enough is the range. You say "budget", "DIY", you don't want to "over improve". Can we at least move water? With the area we live in it would be benefit us to have a very expensive remodel. Although I know it will help to remodel the kitchen to eventaully sell. We are talking about Ikea cabinets to save $$ but will prob do granite and tile flooring. 10-15k is the budget as it stands right now. We will be doing a lot of the labor ourselves. We can move water as DHs Uncle is a plumber and he will basically do it for free if we feed him.. lol island/cabinets on bottom wall I wouldn't need seating at the island and would use it for storage and prep space but I feel that if I do nothing with the bottom wall again and leave it blank - will it look empty still. Can I get a better layout by utilizing that wall with cabinets and forget the island. Can walls/windows/doorways (interior and/or exterior) be modified/moved/eliminated? Interior walls - the bottom wall is structural and behind that wall is steps to the basement. So that wouldn't be possible. Left wall is the wall that is shared with the garage and the right wall is the entry foyer. I am not sure how that would look opening up. I would say no to modifying walls and windows. Is this a one-person kitchen now and forever? A two-or more person? That includes anyone doing anything in the kitchen...prepping, cooking, cleaning up, other. Mostly a one person but I would like it to be at least a 2 person kitchen. We are a growing family and need to think about a highchair as well. Currently, Me, DH and 6 mo old son. How do you feel about banquette seating? How high off the floor are the windows in the small bay bump out where your table is? I wouldn't be opposed to banquette seating - although under the window is a heater that prob can't be moved easily - but I have seem building vents under banquette to allow the heat to flow out.. not sure how that would work. I cook a lot so I have doubles and even triples of every size cookware I use, plus 25 yrs ago I moved in with six sets of dinnerware and three sets of flatware. I have three separate spice drawers because I cook everything from Indian to Chinese to French and half a dozen other cuisines. It was my first (and so far only, thank goodness) opportunity to design a kitchen, so I crammed in all the storage I could. We were handicapped by only having 1 wall of uppers. One half-wall holds the frig and is open to the LR and DR. The other wall has floor-to-ceiling windows to capture a great hillside view: I worked with graph paper and managed to get everything behind doors. It was about a week before I realized I had FORGOTTEN to put in any food storage! I did have three narrow closets in the DR (a former bedrm) for the upright freezer, the microwave and wine stemware, and the table linens/vacuum/stepladder. But nothing for dried pasta, Asian condiments, dried mushrooms, cans of soup, etc. So.....we had fortunately not placed the order for the kitchen cabs yet. Two 18" wide pantry units were hastily added, and placed in-between the DR and kitchen. The top doors hide fixed shelves, the bottom doors hide rollouts. All are height adjustable, heavy-duty. I'd never had a pantry before. Now I'm spoiled and can't imagine living w/o one! A walk-in would be nice, but there's only two of us so not really needed. Ten years later I had a handyman built us a custom storage unit for our indoor back porch area. It was such a pain carrying the vacuum up and down stairs, I finally broke down and bought a second upright. I don't have any good photos of it, but half is deep enough for the vacuum and BBQ tools, about 12". The other half has shallow, 7" shelves that store dry goods like spray paints (for DH's hobby), DW tablets, Brita filters, vacuum cleaner bags, etc....See More

Can he build the cabinets to the ceiling for extra storage? I'm thinking- Glass doors to highlight your blue & white dishes?
The wood crossbar over the sink limits the natural light. Can you remove it? .
So, if you choose green.... You'll have a blue and green scheme in the kitchen. Green cabinets will be a lot of green.. Marry your blue dishes and green cabinets with a rug that has both colors....Since you asked about rugs.....This Loloi rug has different shades of blue, some off white, some gray and accents of green.
