Dead area in center of Creeping Thyme patch

We planted this “Pink Chintz” Creeping Thyme last spring in a sunny border in our yard in upstate New York. It grew well last summer, stayed mostly everGreen during a very cold winter and then really took off earlier this spring, spreading out and flowering beautifully.

Unfortunately, over the last week or two it has developed a large “dead” patch in the center, and now a secondary one along the edge too, even though the rest of the plant is still blooming nicely.

At first, we thought it got stepped on, as there was an opossum nesting under our porch and the thyme was directly on her “route”, but I would think the thyme would be able to withstand a bit of foot traffic from an opossum without showing this damage.

Is it a drainage issue? We do have a lot of clay soil, but we’ve worked hard to amend with compost and improve drainage, and everything else in this border is growing well. And if it is a drainage issue, why would the thyme have grown so nicely until just recently and then taken a sudden downturn? We’ve been careful not to over-water this area, especially since we‘ve had a particularly wet spring.

Any other thoughts or suggestions on what to do?
