I think around 30" x 45" or somewhere close to that.

All cotton? Flannelette? Backing cotton or flannel?

I think just something suitable for a baby. No particular rules. I personally am making all cotton as that is what I have.

I was going to suggest you set out some guidelines but you just said ' no rules'. I may be weird but I like rules. So no rules it is. And I am guessing we have some time. Let me go through my bins tomorrow.

We have until December. The only rule is that it is a quilt suitable for a baby. I am looking forward to presenting the quilts to the new parents. Thank you so much Theresa.

I don't know rules for every hospital, but I would ck with the hosp your DIL will be using. I was told by my local NICU nurse that the quilts must be of cotton, washed w/Dreft detergent, and a specific size for her unit. And i think some rules are in effect for the other babies to be used in the hosp. Of course, the quilts could be presented to the parents to take home....as could all the quilts actually, because the preemies are given such special care that they wouldn't be able to use a quilt. I think that is a very caring thing to do in memory of your grandson: I will pray along with the rest of you for a safe outcome.

These quilts are for the parents to take home with the babies, not for use in the hospital. Therefore, there are not really any rules. Thanks so much for your support!

Jackie, A reminder that our Jaycie is now almost 8 and was perfect when she was born 2 years after her sister, Raina, and she's still perfect.....in every way. :-) Be encouraged my friend.

I hate looking stupid, but I have to ask this question, as without it, I can't participate. What makes a baby quilt? (I didn't have kids, so don't have personal experience.)

I have boxes full of interesting "kid" stuff for quilts. For example, I have I spy charms and ABC panels of all sorts. I have all sorts of backings for kids quilts. Somehow, that doesn't seem appropriate for a newborn. How, exactly do new parents use baby quilts? Is it just symbolic? Do they really not use them? It's generally too hot to really use a quilt here (I'm in Texas) unless a child is born in December or January. It's kind of a keepsake here, as opposed to something that is used.

I need guidance. I'd like to participate, but can't decide what kind of quilt I need to make. What do you make for a newborn?

Bkay, When I make a baby quilt, I make it to be used past the toddler stage. More utilitarian, lay it on the floor for baby to crawl on and look at all the animals, and then to learn what the animals are and say their name. I usually make mine close to 45X50. Jackie said approx 30X45....Make an I Spy....make it any way you want. If using batting, probably low loft or maybe fleece? I'm not sure about using fleece for this but flannel would certainly be acceptable. Or, just make it pastel babyish. Please don't stress......do an image search on Google for baby quilts and that should give you an idea......

I totally agree with what Sharon had to say. And my 30 x 45 is just a minimum size. I, like Sharon, tend to make mine a little bigger too. Also like Sharon said, do not stress over it.

Treasure found. The cleaner/ movers are coming tomorrow to dust and haul everything back down to the basement. I am collecting bins and boxes from around the main floor and piling all in one convenient spot. I would show you a picture of it all but it is too embarrassing.

I did have four finished tops in a pile somewhere and when I checked them out, I had a Double Four Patch done in mainly kiddie prints . Woo-hoo, one for Jackie. Just have to find an appropriate backing.

Thank you, Theresa. The Chocolate Stars is one of my favorites. It's an example of a year long BOM of various stars. My DD chose the colors for her Spicy Mountain Majesties and I like how it turned out except I hurried the last two rows and wish I could do them over. I was surprised at how easy the pattern is.

I don't think I have the time to make a quilt, but I do have a 6 needle embroidery machine and would be happy to stitch out some labels!

Count me in for at least one (maybe from the May Block lotto!). I've been busy sewing and crocheting things for our newest great niece (first girl in my husband's family in 55 years, so she's getting spoiled by my handmade things!). I'm sure I can make one or two more for you, what a great tribute.

You can count on at least one quilt for me, Jackie! If I send it by the end of November, would that be okay time wise? You know baby quilts are my favorite thing to make. I’ve already made one for each guild I belong to and my Piedmont Guild donated 35 quilts to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief after the bad tornado in Greensboro that Sunday I was driving home from our retreat.

I’ve been distracted by work going on at my. house and various projects for my quilt guilds. But you’ve given us more than enough notice ahead of time. I just remembered I’ll see you in September, so I’ll try to bring a quilt or finish one up at the retreat for your donation.
