Shiso plant ( perilla )

Hello guys, I came back from a work experience in Japan and I was very fascinating with the shiso leaves, I was wondering if was possible to grow it here in the UK ( Oxford area ) and advice on how to do it.

Grow it from seed, it seems easy enough... as an annual plant.. but I expect you've already found that out..

Sounds quite tasty from what I've been reading, as a herb...

Susan, thank you for your input. So this is not "damping off"? I have always understood it as that affecting stems but I did see one photo of damping off via Google that showed dark/black leaves instead of the stem buckling over. Not sure what to think but I guess I'll keep them growing to see if they live or die. If something is wrong, I suspect it's too late to cure them. And I have too many seeds to spend time curing ones that don't want to live, right? Or maybe it's the soil mix I used. It was a really gritty variation and perhaps it was just a combo not much liked by seeds though the speed of germination said otherwise, Thanks!

Thanks Seysonn, that's helpful. I ended up letting the ones that were further along go to seed and have started collecting seed for next year. Meanwhile, I picked all the flower buds off the ones that hadn't gone completely to seed and made a ginger-shiso-toasted sesame oil pesto with the flower buds. Pretty tasty, but the sesame oil dominated...next time I'll go with olive oil. Hopefully, we'll get a few more weeks of leaves out of the plants I de-flowered. Yes, Jim, according to Japanese sources, shiso seeds stay dormant for at least 6 months before they will germinate. Smart temperate climate annual weeds, if you ask me. Very unlike it's cousin basil that will germinate right away - perhaps partly due to more extensive history of cultivation and selection in favor of fast germination?

Have to warn you, this actually started as a container plant! I had gotten the seeds in a "Round Robin" swap and the gardener was considerate enough to put a warning on it.....best in pots, reseeds like crazy in beds. So I put the WS'd sprouts in a planter (where frankly I put my "least favorites" - - come on - you know what I am talking about. don't we all sort our plants for containers very carefully? Best plants on the front steps, etc. Well this got put in the planter sort of out of the way on the deck. When I saw it grow and that the foliage was so great, I moved some to other containers around the yard. The rest is history. Seeds easily blew out of the containers and rolled into beds. But it has been "in beds" reseeding for about 4 years now and As long as I pull it where I don't want it early in the spring (when I am in there anyway, weeding..) it's great. I kind of think that it depends on the kind of beds you have. My gardens are a mish mash, planted tight, no mulch (cause no ground..) I've got a patchwork of little bits of everything in every bed. It's a tossed salad. I like it, but it is not for the conservative. If you have 4.5 inches between each carefully mulched with dyed black pine bark beds, it's not the plant for you!!!!!

If you have the seeds, you can direct sow in the garden, providing nighttime temps remain above 8C. Just make sure the soil is well drained but remains moist and the area receives plenty of sun. Directions should be on the seed package. The seeds should germinate within 3 weeks. Once they germinate and begin to grow, you should treat the same as you would basil.

Retail nurseries here sell perilla/shiso starts with their other herbs so you might want to hunt for those if growing already started plants would be easier than growing from seeds.

Thank you for the information, I got the seeds today, I saw on internet to soak some of them into water the night before so I'll pant them tomorrow, I just want to buy separate pot because I heard the plant is real invasive. Regarding the soil, can I buy just any normal from the shop ?

Unless you are growing in a pot you don't need to buy soil. Just plant it in the garden soil, after cultivation, obviously. If you're growing in a pot just buy a bag of multipurpose compost.
