Overall, it s a lovely house. I find nothing wrong with the windows and would keep them. Adding new garage doors with windows would seem too busy a look, competing with all other windows on the front of the house, so I would keep them as is. Don't make them more fancy than the rest of the house. The eye should go to the front door. I love the picture you posted for a new front door and is a nice, easy and generally not too costly way to make a quick update. My preference is always to have a roof over the front door, and I would work with an architect who could come up with some ideas for that. And the stairs need a handrail. Yes, wait to see what colors would go with the roof, the blue is pretty but perhaps the owner would prefer a more sublte color. Good luck!

Well then keep looking this will never be a craftsman or IMO traditional. My first change would be the front door .I find the covered porch next to the entry a bit dd . Is there no backyard space . Unless you are thinking of removing all the stacked stone or what appears to be stacked you will need a bucket of money. Could post pics that we can enlarge might help. Maybe some inspiration pics to give use some idea of what you think is English French traditonal

I would replace your front door with something more unique and less traditional. Maybe a full light with a funky glass design. And lose that storm door! Replace your dated lighting with something more current. Perhaps replace light post with bubbling rock with a light in it? All your windows have the fake mullions except the big glass of your bay window and I find that looks odd. Either add fake mullions to that window or remove the fakes from the rest of your windows. Your garden plantings are on the verge of becoming overgrown, especially the shrub on left of pic. Your bay window and porch are becoming hidden so I would do some major thinning. I also find your shutters are too narrow, replace with wider panelled shutters and keep same colour. You could also funk up your bay window by replacing asphalt roof with a metal roof. I was thinking copper but I'm not sure the colour would work with your house.

It's a mid-century home, more in keeping with "mid century modest" than "mid century modern." I'm not looking to make it something that it isn't. However, houses like this are getting older, and I want the things we do to be "period sympathetic"--not authentic, and not high end. This house is on a quiet street in a small mid-western town. It makes no sense to improve it out of proportion to the neighborhood. So, when I ask, "what can be done for $5,000 to $8,000?" that's really what I mean. What is possible with a smaller budget? My husband wants to tear down the porch. I want to replace the bay window with a picture window. We've been looking, and we think a modest entrance like this could be created within our budget., maybe just retaining the existing porch overhang of the original roof, which is still there. Of course, we would choose stone or brick to coordinate with our red brick. Hopefully, when it's time to do the roof, we'll be able to do this, and maybe we'll just skip the skylight.
