Copper fungicide vs Sulfur fungicide vs GreenCoreA

My Zinnia suffered (from) terrible Blight last year and I want to get a handle on it before it happens again.

Question is...I don't know which way to go with fungicide.

I've done a bit of research on all 3 but am still not sure.

Any thoughts?

have you confirmed the diagnosis ... or are you using the term 'blight' generally ...

its a place we have to start.. to lead you to the proper treatment ...

any chance at a pic from last year???

no pic but i looked at pictures and read the descriptions on the web and i'm pretty sure of my diagnosis. It was definitely not powdery mildew.

Yeah...in fact it states right on the bag to not apply when temps exceed 80F. It also can injure three types of apple also, I believe being Jonathan, Golden Del. and maybe Macintosh. I've never had any chemical burn or really any issues with it whatsoever. In fact, before knowing about the temp limit I have sprayed it probably 30-40 times in temps way exceeding 80 with heavy mixes and also never had an issue, although I certainly no longer do that. That is another reason I started using immunox so that I'd have a fungicide I could use beyond early June. It also says on the bag it can in some cases cause injury to Concord grape and species of it. Before knowing this (yes, I really should read all the instructions first) I had always sprayed all my grapes including concord and seedless concord with it. Again...never ever had any negative effects. I still spray all my grapes with it religously because quite frankly my grapes look better than those I've seen where other fungicides are used. I basically operated on the idea that I'd tank mix sulfur with my insecticide sprays regularly and if something cropped up I'd identify it and get a different (if necessary)spray to target it. I'll probably pick up some MFF, I hear alot of good things about it. I wonder what it's shelf life is?

Serenade Garden is "Bacillus subtilis" and is listed as a control for early Blight. Ive never had to use it so I can't say haw effective it is. Copper has been used as a fungicide for years, but I have not ever had to use it. Potassium Bicarbonate is rated by Cornell as doing a fiar job of controlling Early Blight, I have use Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) to control Powdery Mildew and Black Spot on roses with good success but have not had any reason to look for Potassium Bicabonate. I have also used a 50/50 mixture of fat free milk and water for Powdery Mildew and Black Spot but have not seen any of the other fungal diseases so have no experience there.

I have used Soap Shield copper fungicide for three years with excellent results for BS on roses and powdery mildew on other plants. I stopped alternating fungicides last season, and I still had little to no black spot problems. I spray about every two weeks. Be careful not to drench the foliage too much or you'll get a buildup that dries to a bright blue -- and won't wash off. Soap Shield stains very badly. Don't get it on patio pavers, either. It does not wash off! I had to wince when I saw you mention Wilt-Pruf. I'm very responsible about following package directions, and I nearly killed every evergreen and azalea in our yard by spraying them with Wilt-Pruf last November. I will never ever buy it again, and I'd never recommend it. I'm in a plant sciences curriculum in college and one of my teachers told us to never use something that can seal off the stomata, and sure enough, that's what happened to 100-ft of yews and junipers in our yard. They look awful right now, and the arborist we use said the damage is not winter burn. So be very careful if you want to use Wilt-Pruf.

Dear Larry, You are absolutely right. Trans fat laden margerine has and will continue to kill people prematurely by the millions. Let me point out that I am not one of your American nutritionists, in fact I don't even want to talk to these people with miserable bachelor academic credentials, following guidelines set forth by their "American Dietetic Association" which is basically preaching the wisdom of big (processed) food corporations. In that case, it may have not even been a fungal disease, in which case fungicides would be worthless. By copper, do you mean copper sulfate? And by sulfur do you mean flowers of sulfur? I am completely uninformed about GreenCoreA.

If the disease is fungal and not Powdery Mildew, then I would be thinking in terms of a systemic fungicide, like Tebuconazole. Do you know if GreenCoreA is systemic?

But a "terrible blight" suggests unhygienic growing conditions, like one of those black organic mulches. Do you have the option of growing your zinnias in a different place?

The copper i'm thinking of is Bonide (i think)

The sulfur is one i saw on Amazon when i looked up fungicide

As far as a different growing site...can't do it. I garden in a community plot and the plot I've got is what I've got.

I told the grower about my experience last year and he recommended the fungicide but couldn't advise me as to which one i should go with

Hi Dale,

GreenCure is not a systemic fungicide (it is Potassium bicarbonate with a proprietary wetting agent) so any rain will wash it right off. For that matter, a heavy dew can wash it right off. I have seen weather conditions when you would literally need to reapply GreenCure every day. It is good stuff and I use it myself to spot treat Powdery Mildew on my indoor zinnias.

Bonide copper fungicide is Copper octanoate (a copper soap). I haven't used it in decades, and don't remember being impressed by it.

Bonide sulfur fungicide is elemental sulfur. Also one I haven't used in decades.

But here we are discussing fungicides when we don't know if your zinnia blight was fungal, bacterial, viral, or nematodes. Or possibly damage from drift of some nearby use of a herbicide. Or something toxic in your community plot put there by the previous user of the plot. Is there any chance you can trade to get a different community plot? Did you publish pictures of your zinnia blight last year?

I didn't publish pictures last season.

I cant change plots. This is why I want to treat my Zinnia preemptively...before the fungus or whatever it is takes hold.

I was hoping that by using one of the fungicides I mentioned, that I would be able to stave off another attack.

Are you saying treat the zinnia bed soil, or treat the zinnia plants?

That doesn't tell us what attacked your zinnias, and not knowing that, I can't recommend a prevention. What if your problem was an actual blight ?

I just want to prevent another bad year but as i don't seem to have enough info to reliably do that i guess i'll just wait and see what happens and react as things occur

Hi Dale,

I sympathize with your situation. You might try treating the bed with Physan 20

It is effective against a wide variety of pathogens. I use it a lot in my indoor zinnia project. It might be effective against your "blight", whatever it is.

Hello Dale,

That is a seriously diseased zinnia. Did it grow there from a seed, or did you transplant it there? Have you applied anything to combat the disease?

I would expect that disease to spread and kill that zinnia. Your "soil" has a curious black look. I suspect the soil is very disease ridden. I suggest you contact your County Agent about this problem.

I got this Zinnia from a local nursery. I got it at a diffrent nursery than the one from last year. Does it look like a fungus to you? The soil looks black because I just watered it. No one else at the community garden has a problem. Should I use the Physon 20? This is the point at which I want to use the fungicide but i'm not sure which one. I think i'm just going to go ahead with the Bonide copper as it is the most readily available.

Hello Dale,

Well, you can treat it with Copper if you wish. That is assuming that the disease is a fungus. But what if it is a Bacterial Leaf Spot ?

Bacteria and Fungi are quite different. I reiterate my suggestion to seek the advice of your County Agent. Situation awareness is all important.

And when I water my soil, it doesn't look anything like that.

ooooh. it certainly could be bacterial leaf spot! who is it that i should contact? I live in a city. I don't think we have a County Agent. does the fact that it doesn't seem to affect my other plants i.e. vegetables make a case for bacterial leaf spot? I am very unhappy. :(

Most cities are in a county. Large cities can be in more than one county. You probably have a County Agent. Situation awareness...
