Have you tried digging up to see what is there? Either everything rotted in our awful winter, or something poisoned the bed. If rotted, you should still find roots that seem viable, but the crowns will be white, rotten mush.

Your area had a lot of snow...does the bed border a road that gets salted? Always best to take a look at whatchugot (left) underground.

Nope...lawn doesn't get sprayed and this bed edge is a good distance from the driveway (which doesn't get salt or treatment anyway). I haven't had a chance to go digging around, but it just occurred to me that three Brunnera (Jack Frost) that I planted two years ago that looked fabulous last summer are also MIA. But I'm new to Brunnera and don't know if they would be leafed out by now. We had a decent amount of snow, but not record amounts, and several days of extreme cold -- but I'm not sure that it was record cold.

One thought: would ants do this? We had underground ant nests in this area a few years ago and sprayed for that. I haven't seen any activity and don't know if they would be active over the winter and early spring.

FWIW.....I dug, but did not find much. A few slightly slimey roots. But no intact crown or obvious root system. As tho' the plant had just disintegrated. I just read the resurrected thread from a few years ago where someone had what sounds like a similar problem in Minnesota...….but it didn't sound like there were any definitive answers.
