Comments (12)Thank you for all the fantastic info thus far. I will assume that she will not spray since she's tried and failed at roses before, and I doubt that a regular spray program would be followed unless and until she falls in love with a rose that will love her back! She sent me some additional information this morning in response to my question to her re: site and sun... ----------- "I really appreciate this CL :) i do have good space- clearly not as much as you but enough...my goal was to get climbers that would cover this fugly rusty chain link fence that borders two sides of my front yard....the side i would most like to fill in - gets decent morning and late after noon sun but is dapple-shaded during the day a couple sugar maples trees.. that the spot i have tried a few varieties but they dont seem to take. :( also have a area behind my attached a garage that would be nice for a climber. the bed is about 20 long x ~4 ft wide. gets excellent morning sun but thats it. ( gray house) would love a white climber for that spot. does that help?" -------------- I'm hoping this specific info will help you pinpoint some choices for her. It sounds like she needs a combination of hedge roses for her fenceline and a magnificent climber....See MoreBlanc Double de Coubert
Comments (16)I had poor luck with BDdC whenever it was wet - ugly soiled tissue look, and with those thorns, hard work deadheading. But great luck with Hansa, Polareis, and Therese Bugnet. I lost Topaz Jewel because it was in a bad spot by top of hilly driveway, too vulnerable to winter salt. TB was the very first rose I ever bought, from Wayside Gardens back in late 80's. It survived rose cane borers, being shunted to a neglected garden, and generally being ignored until a few years ago. I found that it had rooted itself AND sent out a daughter (it had been a graft, but being so ignored, the natural accretion of dead weeds etc must have given it the opportunity). Anyway, I gave away the daughter about 15 years ago to a friend who has to prune it to keep it from eating her whole garden. The original was joined by a second daughter a few years later. Four years ago I moved them both, pruned hard, to the center piece of the new rose garden I put in on south side of house. It is impossible to tell which was which at this point, and I regularly pot up new ones that shoot up every year, for the church and library plant sales on Mother's Day weekend. TB is absolutely clean, all the time. Usually the first to bloom, long huge first flush can go on for over three weeks. Another flush, smaller, mid summer, but never without a few blossoms here and there. And fragrant. Can you tell I love TB?...See MoreTell me~Madame Plantier & Blanc double Coubert
Comments (13)My Blanc Double de Coubert (3 yrs old) is about 3.5 ft tall and 4 ft wide--not as big as I hoped, but maybe it is just a slow grower. I wanted it to get 4-5 ft tall. It certainly didn't do much of anything its first two years, but it is a satisfactory rose now. However, I wish it were more floriferous, but maybe the problem is that it gets a bit of shade in the afternoons. Don't know if it would bloom more with more sun or not. If I give it an extra watering occasionally, it seems to bloom better. Love the foliage on it, and it gets no disease of any kind. Kate (Zone 6 midwest)...See MoreWhat about Blanc Double de Coubert?
Comments (5)I grow it and it is about chest high, 4 feet or so. It was just coming into its own when it was overwhelmed by root stock of another plant that I dithered a little too long over removing. Blanc Double de Coubert had become very misshapen and so was pruned somewhat severely to bring it into balance. It is slowly recovering. It had not repeat bloomed until this year and even then only a bloom or two. Nevertheless I like it quite a bit. It is a white white and blooms earlier than most roses, although not as early as some of those yellows like Harrison's. It has a pleasing scent and forms hips when I let it. It is thorny but then most roses are. It doesn't make my heart go pitty-pat but it is a nice comfortable, companionable rose that I value more with each passing year. An afterthought: It is not especially double. By that I mean the stamens are visible. I believe that the fully double form is Souvenir de Philemon Cochet (which I have not seen in person) but Philemon has a lower rating. Cath...See Moreswamp_rose
