She could be nuts or on something.

She was quite elderly so maybe that could have been a factor. Dementia? Now that I've had time to process it, I probably should have reported it. It's very unsafe behavior, and not only for the other driver. If she does that to the wrong person, it could end badly for her.

There's no mental health, intelligence or mental acuity standard to get a driver license, except in extreme cases. You run into the same lulus in cars as when otherwise out in public on foot, no matter where and no matter what you're doing. My expectation of the sensibility/capabilities of my fellow drivers (and fellow citizens out and about) is low and I'm not often disappointed with what I experience. It's rare that someone's unexpected or outrageous conduct surprises me.

I'd chalk it up to that, someone with personality or mental health challenges that aren't being dealt with effectively.

Quite elderly, may also mean her eyesight is bad. Maybe in her mirror it appeared that you were closer to her car then you were.

Sometimes I wonder if it would be helpful to have signs built in on cars, something like this:

you could write, uh oh, I screwed up, Lemme in your lane? Or get off my tail, or get off the $&@#% Phone!

Maybe she has poor depth perception and thought you were too close. Something weird seems to happen to me every time I get in my car. lol

I noticed a car the other day that had a "hearing impaired" sign in their rear view mirror. I thought that was a good idea.

I've heard about "accident" scams that involve something like what you are describing, but I think there is also sometimes a second car involved. For some reason, I doubt that the woman was part of that (trying to get you to crash into her), but you never know.

I agree...very bazarre. People do the strangest things....

I had a grocery cashier the other day telling me what a bad deal/poor advertising their prescription coupon was. I said, "I haven't had a prescription since I was on "The Pill." She looked flustered, having made the assumption that "everyone took a pill for something".

But I'm going to assume....this person was on drugs....:0)

I think we need a dash camera. Chi would have needed one before reporting this to the police.

I'm too much of an optimist to consider having a dash cam. Yikes, driving on the roads can't be that treacherous for you guys. If it got that bad for me, I'll switch to Uber/Lyft and public transportation. I don't expect that to happen anytime soon or ever.

I've considered getting one, mostly for a record. I've never been in an accident but I have seen my fair share of reckless drivers. Snapping a photo of their license plate is just as reckless if I'm driving and my memory isn't good enough to remember license plate numbers.

My guess is that she had overrun the stop line and was part way into the intersection. When she made the move to back up, maybe she spied a cop, she wanted you to back up to make room and you did not budge; possibly you had a car on you rear bumper and could not. She then got mad, however, it was her error in the first place, but no never mind, she is queen and now you are stepping on her ego.

I have seen this infraction so often that it has become common practice. Drivers in my area consistently overrun the stop line, sometimes their entire vehicle goes beyond the line. In my state, the stop line is 3 ft behind the crosswalk and if the crosswalk is not marked, imagine there is one there. If you are attempting to make a right turn on red, you still need to make an official stop, look over the situation and then move forward if you need to improve you sight line.

I remember following a guy on the way to work one morning and he was just nuts...driving too slowly, leaning on the horn at any car that made a turn in front of him, however safely, he really had problems. Fortunately I was able to give him plenty of space. Sometimes crazy people happen.

I agree with Annie, "crazy people happen" .... she's lucky you are one of the sane people.

A few weeks ago there was an elderly lady driving down the blvd at a slow speed and regardless of who was driving by or around her she was honking her horn like it was a musical instrument. I was just glad she didn’t turn when I did.

There is hardly a day that goes by that I do see something that boggles the mind on the roads. I’m glad it was nothing worse than that.

last week my friend and I were driving on the turnpike and some numskull was speeding and cutting in and out of traffic, endangering everyone around him. I was glad when he got well beyond us. Where are the cops when you wish they were around!

Call 911 when you see a car exhibiting dangerous or erratic conduct/movement.

Bizarre. Maybe even though you werent tailgating her, she thought you were too close or something. Or maybe she was mad because she couldnt back up. Either way, her behavior was excessive. I am glad nothing happened.

As for dash cams, I made SO put one in his 18 wheeler. About a week after I did so, he was behind a woman at a stop sign. She sat there for around five minutes, before throwing her car in reverse and ramming into the truck. When the cops got there, she wailed about how she had barely stopped at the stop sign, and that SO had plowed into her, and even had the GALL to say that she smelled alcohol on him. SO gave his version, and told the cop he had dash cam video. The cop was not surprised at her actions. He said a lot of people target big trucks these days for a quick payout, but did not put the dash cam evidence in the report. Well, of course,she filed a lawsuit for 500,000 dollars. Her deposition was quite amusing I am told. Anywho, obviously the dash cam saved a bunch of money and SOs livelihood. If he were more vindictive, he probably could (and should,IMO) have had her locked up or filed suit against her. (For what,I dont know granted, but there must be some repercussions for that) That was several years ago, and she is still trying to file suit over and over, but keeps getting dropped when the attorney gets the dash cam evidence.

He has since gotten all of our vehicles dash cams, just in case. When and if an accident does happen,it can be jarring and having a recording of the incident helps for sure. They are quite inexpensive too.

Great idea about the dash cam. I would hope all truck drivers, of any size, have them. People are nuts. Sounds like she was trying to make you hit her from behind, which of course, would put you at fault. Dollar signs, and a new car, can cause some bizarre behavior. I feel sorry for big rig drivers.

As with olychick I also heard of scamers doing this. They want you to rear end them. Then they sue complaining of neck and back pain. Scamers come in all ages.

I have a dash cam for "just in case" and also for the entertainment value of watching the bizarre behavior of people on the roads. I love uploading "bad driver caught on dash cam" videos and YouTube is full of dashcam idiot driver videos. :)

I don't have it because I'm not an optimist. Lol

So where does one get a dash cam? And are there different brands?

My first thought was the same as jemdandy - she over-ran the line, may have been too far into the intersection, and trying to back up.

It's possible. I think there was a car or two in front of her, but I can't remember for sure.

I also had a car behind me so I couldn't really move. If I see someone trying to back up, I back up too if I can.

pudgeder, I got his first one at walmart. It was one of those Christmas grab presents they put in the aisles. All the rest i got off either ebay or amazon. There are different brands and different price ranges, with different bells and whistles on each. All of ours we had to put in a SD card, although not all of them may require that,and some come with them. His favorite is the one i bought him that goes over his rearview mirror, and has different camera angles (NOT THE ONE ON THE INFOMERCIAL-thats garbage). I think the brand is Falcon. Ill check. Of course it was the most expensive at over 100 bucks. You can get others way cheaper though. ( The first one i got him was around 30 i think.) He moved that one to one of his racecars so it will record as it goes down the racetrack. Its pretty neat.

Yup. Falcon. I got the Falcon Zero 360. The one i got came with the SD card.

I am always very courteous on the road, never follow to closely and obey all regulations. A few years ago, I pulled up at a stoplight behind a car I had not even noticed previously. He proceeded to gesture all around, made it a point to get behind me - way too close - then pulled up beside me, lowered his window and threw a glass of ice at the side of my car! I could only think he had mistaken me for someone else! But talk about unsettling! I did my best to ignore him and eventually he took off down the road. My son rode with me the other day and thought I left too much distance between my car and the one ahead, but I reminded him that I don't own the road, let people get in front of me as needed. Around here, folks will shoot you if you make eye contact.

I got mine at Amazon - it's a TaoTronics, comes with a card, records video AND audio, and has great resolution.

We have the same one in my car, DH's car, and we have an "extra" that we swap between our two MGs.

Years ago, I was behind a man waiting for traffic to clear so he could pull out of a parking lot onto the street. When it was clear for him to go, rather than going forward, he put his car in reverse and backed into my front bumper. He then pulled forward as if he was going to go only to put his car in reverse a second time and back into my front bumper again!

The first time I was startled and thought he must have had his car in neutral while waiting for the traffic and that he shifted into reverse rather than drive in error, but after bumping me a second time it couldn't have been that.

Because it was dark out and the parking lot fairly empty, I was hesitant to get out of my car to confront him. Before I could decide on a course of action, he drove off at a high rate of speed and that was the last I saw of him.

Luckily, he only tapped my bumper both times so there was no damage to my car.

Just bizarre - I have no idea what that was all about.

How is data saved on dash cam? And how long?

My dash cameras use SDHC chips. The data remains until it is written over. My cameras have adjustable recording times, 1,3,5, or 10 minutes. The cameras are supposed to detect a collision and continue running for 30 seconds, then save the data that contains the collision

so is recording triggered only when theres some kind of change in movement, either a bump, or sudden brakek or sudden stop. Or stated otherwise, no event, no recording?

There's a lot of people that live in their heads anyway, and now we are living in an age of social isolation brought on by the prevalence of electronic devices. And deteriorating elderly people who shouldn't still be driving keep doing so because they do not want to accept the change in their situation, the horror of their faculties slipping away - and make other arrangements. So then we have driving too slowly down the road honking at everybody instead.

I don't call the cops every time I see something wild in traffic because if I did that I'd be calling all the time. Also one time I did call after seeing somebody entering a supermarket parking lot by missing the entrance and bouncing up over the sidewalk as though drunk, waited at the store for the cops to show up I was told "Well, he's old!" - as though that made it okay.

Recording is constant, in pre determined lengths, 1, 3, 5, or 10 minutes long. The camera will overwrite those images unless saved. A collision is supposed to automatically save the current video, which may be of 1, 3, 5, or 10 minutes long.

Sound like an attempted smash and sue. Recently I had a young girl drive around the traffic via a right-turn only lane, she had to jump a curb to cut in front of me. I just barely saw her tiny car in time to avoid hitting her. Funny thing, there were only about 8 cars that she jumped. She must have gotten too many "participation awards" and thought she didn't have to wait in line...

What Jim said regarding recording times, at least for my camera. Mine also has a manual “still photo” button as well. And mine can be set to come on when motion is detected while my car is parked.

My cameras also have the hit while parked function, but; the camera is facing forward, the car is parked and hit in the rear, the camera activates, filming a front facing view.

I do not leave my cameras mounted while parked in public places. I live and park in areas leaving a dash camera in view might result in a smashed window.

I guess some of you must face different situations than I do or have because I'm failing to understand the need. It's been over 50 years since my first driver license, it was a provisional learner's permit. I know from thinking about the accumulated mileage on the main cars I've owned in my adult years that I've certainly driven well over 750K miles in my lifetime, all over the US and maybe in a few dozen foreign countries. Including both in the more sedate (driving wise) parts of Europe as well as in the less predictable Mediterranean areas and in several third world countries. I can't think of one instance when having such a camera would have been useful.
