Bamboo cultivar preservation -somatic embryogenesis?

Werner Stiegler

Hello Bamboo folks,

Just getting into bamboo and learning about gregarious blooming and cultivar extinction due to the monocarpic behavior of most bamboos. I was shocked to read that once blooming has begun world wide, there has been little to zero success in preventing plants from entering the bloom and death cycle. It is particularly mind boggling that vegetative propagation from roots or even tissue culture has been unable to reset this "bloom clock". My question is, does anyone know if somatic embryo-genesis has been attempted? This process induces individual plant cells to revert back into seed cells, thereby creating essentially an infinite number of identical seedlings. It would seem to me that whatever chemical or cellular pathway that controls the blooming mechanism would be interrupted by this process. Has this been tried?

Cheers,

Werner
