Anyone out there growing Ballerina in zone 4?
Comments (3)In zone 5a it dies back to the ground but rebounds. In my garden it now is about 18 inches tall after having the spent bloom clusters cut off. New buds grew quickly and it's now almost ready for another flush which looks to be much larger than the original. It will stay small in our zones due to the winter dieback. Mine is an own root and only gets oak leaves that are blown in by nature as winter protection. I've had mine for at least 10 years....See MoreDoes anyone grow Sharifa Asma in zone 4 (or above)
Comments (14)Kristin flower: I had mine in morning (5 or 6 hours) sun when it was in a pot, and the flowers lasted well. There is a little more sun where it is now, but of course, it has not yet flowered in that position, so I can't really judge. I have only buried my bud unions 2-3" deep, and so that's why I am too afraid not to use winter protection. I don't know - maybe Predfern and Twohuskies bury their unions deeper, and because of that, don't winter protect? If I was going to take a chance, it would be with a rose that I don't like anymore, definitely NOT Sharifa Asma LOL Judith...See Morebamboo in zone 4??
Comments (8)Wanted to follow up on this. My Fargesia Rufa has indeed made it thru a southern WI winter, it was just slow getting started in the spring. I would guess that it has more than doubled in volume, altho height hasn't really taken off yet - it's perhaps 2' high right now. Very impressive, considering I haven't done anything special to take care of or protect the plant over the winter. My guess is that with a little more attention on my part, this will be a very effective screening plant once fully established. Plus it looks great....See Moregrowing moso bamboo in southern ontario zone6a
Comments (2)Hey Greg, growing Moso in your zone6a....well lets just say...it is a risky plant to try. although i'm trying it...lol.....There was some talk about it in some earlier posts this year. do a search for Moso in this forum. see what comes up. I believe the archives go back about 4 months or so. Hoosier lives in z5 and is growing it with lots of care. your thoughts are pretty good. Others will chime in i'm sure. I plan on bringing mine into the garage for the winter. Just another note....Moso will not achieve its mature statistics for us. I think somone told me maybe half.....if it lives. Moso appears to shoot quite early and our frost season(spring) kills any new shoots. Hope this helps. I'm no expert on Moso but just some tidbits from talks in here before.
