The Royal Wedding

Stunning, so far. I was riveted by the power of Bishop Curry's powerful (though long) address and the addition of the black gospel choir was perfect amidst all of the rigid royal pageantry.

Lovely moment when Prince Charles escorted Meghan to his awaiting son.

What a glorious, sunny day!

Beautiful pictures, except Prince Phillip looks like a corpse. I also love the black and white one.

I, too, really like the black and white photo, and when I first saw it earlier this morning, I wondered when it had been taken. The caption for this photo in the article that Diane_NJ linked says, "The bride and groom themselves posed for a romantic black-and-white photo featuring just the two of them. Taken just moments after they tied the knot, the love and happiness they felt on the day is evident on their smiling faces."

How could it have been taken "just moments after they tied the knot"? When we saw them emerge from the church, they paused on the steps and had their first public kiss, then they continued down the steps and into the carriage. And where is her veil?

And look at Harry's smile in the B&W photo of him and Meghan and his smile in the one with the kids. He just looks so happy and contented.

I liked how so many of their smiles during the coverage were for each other, not for the camera or the spectators. A good sign for a good marriage, I think.

@Lindsey- I'm pretty sure the black & white pic was taken after they got back to Windsor Castle after the carriage ride. Might not be exactly 'moments'. More like half an hour later I guess.

I didn't see the whole thing but the highlights, thanks to the poster above who mentioned it. I thought it was wonderful and I must admit Meghan's dress photographs beautifully.

I'm surprised the Jaguar has the steering wheel on the left. Anyone know why?

What's your take on the fact that Kate didn't buy something new to wear to the wedding? This was her fourth time wearing that outfit. I know she wore the hat to at least one other wedding. Nothing wrong in wearing something over and over, of course, but I think if I cared deeply about the couple I'd be inclined to buy something new for their wedding. Especially if I knew I'd be photographed and my outfit commented upon in the press. Or maybe not.

Do you attach any significance to this, or am I making too much of it?

It's my understanding that she often wears outfits over and over. According to what I read, she wanted to be understated, not drawing any attention away from the elegant bride.

I was watching ET this evening and a couple shots of Kate looked pretty somber. One was right after the ceremony . Maybe she was just tired?

I think Kate is known for recycling not only her own clothing but the children's.

It wasn't her day, she looked lovely and that is all that matters.

I think her MIL was getting on her nerves!

And why wouldn't she be tired? A new baby and having to wrestle two children into their page boy/bridemaid outfits and then herd them to the church and up the aisle?

I imagine she has worn this before when she had a bit more tummy and it fit. She was not the star - the bride was.

That's why I said " maybe she was just tired." Surely though, she must have had some help with the kids. I did hear them say that Kate was in charge of the kids which I wondered about!

Good point, Rhizo. Kate gets a lot of attention, especially with a new baby, and she could have made a point of trying to recede into the background a bit on Meghan's special day. That makes sense. Just for the record, I've always liked her a lot.

She wore the dress more than once. So what. Someone makes an issue of it. I find that petty. How does that become catty? Or were you speaking to Alisande's comment? Guess that could be construed as catty.

I did think it was a little odd that Kate was staring at her lap and flipping through the program during the vows. She seemed a little detached but I agree she was likely trying to divert attention from herself.

I really like that she recycles outfits.

I'm sure glad no one cares enough about me to critique every move, lol. I guess that's the price for being a royal.

Given that she just had a baby less than a month ago let's give her a break as to what she was wearing. Maybe it was the most comfortable thing in her closet. It didn't have a waist, it wasn't a sheath, maybe it was let out a little, or maybe it was just comfortable.

I've read and seen photographic evidence of Kate and Camilla being quite close. Harry and William have developed a warm relationship with her, as well. The Queen has long welcomed Camilla into the fold.

Maybe this is one of Kate's post-pregnancy-body dresses and she doesn't want to own too many in this size.

I sure hope recycling a previously worn piece of clothing doesn't show a lack of respect for the honoree. I have had my funeral dress since 1999 - black sheath, 3/4 sleeves, polyester, doesn't wrinkle. Perfect.

I don't think you have to buy stuff to show people that you care for them. If something is clean, presentable and appropriate I think it is fine to wear it even if it is already in your closet.

Alisande, I found out about the Jaguar. This particular model was originally planned for the Canadian/U.S. market. I don't know who the present owner is, or where he or she is from, though. Pretty snazzy ride to their party, huh?

  • Alisande

Thanks, Rhizo! Snazzy indeed. I loved that car back in the 1960s. Not that I ever owned one, but I'll always remember the gorgeous Charlie Beagan in his gorgeous XKE. lol

Prince Harry must be very adaptable (a sign of intelligence, they say) to have driven that car on the left side of the road. I'm glad they arrived safely!

Roxanna, my s-i-l just happened to send us this just 5 minutes ago - our car crazy sons and son in law were discussing how much the rental cost for just a few hours! Of course I have no idea if this is true or not, but he read it on MSN, whatever that is I'm not sure.

Harry and Meghan memorably sped off to the evening reception in a baby blue 1968 Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero, which retails for around $471,000. The Sun reports that the car, which runs on battery power after a recent conversion, was rented especially for the occasion.

Actually, I just found this which gives some more info on the car -

Re Kate’s dress...I saw a photo spread of her in the same dress, including the one at the recent wedding and two other occasions. She is known for shopping her closet and accessorizing with different hats and shoes. I thought she looked wonderful, and perhaps, as someone said, she hasn’t lost that last 3 or so pounds yet and this one fit.

On another note, have you all seen the official family and wedding party photographs? I still maintain Camilla’s hat could have, and should have, been smaller. Or as someone on FB said, an attic somewhere is missing it’s insulation. I giggled at that one.

My feelings for the couple being married wouldn't play into whether I bought a new outfit or not ... but the idea of being famous and being photographed would push me out to the stores.

It's my understanding that she often wears outfits over and over. According to what I read, she wanted to be understated, not drawing any attention away from the elegant bride.

The woman is made of elegance and class.

I've never driven a British car, but my British son-in-law doesn't have any problem driving here in the States /going back home and driving. Similarly, my husband drove a British rental car on a vacation, and he said he had to concentrate more carefully, but he didn't find it difficult.

I believe the car belongs to Prince Charles.

It was a gorgeous vehicle, and I'm not a car person.

Frogmore House is on the grounds at Windsor Castle. It's a straight shot. I'm sure Harry, who has flown helicopters in combat, can drive a left-hand car for a mile or two on a straight road without trouble. Also explains why they really didn't need to bother with seat belts. Three minute drive, no other traffic, probably few hazards at 25 mph.

I think Kate’s had her hands full lately. She also avoided any competition. It was Meghan ‘s day. Kate looked perfectly appropriate. Funny, it never dawned on me that the steering wheel was on the right. How American!

  • nickel_kg

aok, I'm glad you mentioned why they didn't use their seatbelts. It made me cringe, seeing they didn't buckle up. (Very sad story: pastor married a happy young couple. Bride didn't want to crush her dress; died in car accident on way to reception. Can you imagine the anguish. Incidentally I knew the pastor, if anyone could find words for a bride's funeral service, he could. Or maybe he just cried with them.) Anyhow, buckle up for safety. Always. /end of public service announcement!

Drive on the left, drive on the right? Switching from one to the other is honestly a non-issue.

On two different trips last year, as a for instance, I had 7 day car rentals in drive on the left countries (cars with the driver's position on the right, as in the UK). I've lived abroad but only in drive on the right countries. It's not a problem and doesn't require any added concentration after the first 10 minutes. Really.

What did take concentration was that one of the cars had a manual transmission. A clutch pedal is generic and in the same place to the left of the brake pedal, but shifting with the left hand (I'm a rightly with little coordination with my left limb) did take some focus. I resolved that on future occasions, I need to be remember to specify a car with an automatic tranny.

If we're going to diagnose pregnancy based on loose fitting clothes, then poor Megan has been pregnant for a very long time LOL. Look back at her coats, Etc. They're very big and bulky and a lot of them are tied with wide cloth belts. She just likes that kind of clothes!

Drive on the left, drive on the right? Switching from one to the other is honestly a non-issue.

But in your experience driving on the left, weren't you driving a car with the steering wheel on the right? I've never had to make the switch, but it seems to me having the steering wheel in the wrong place might confuse things a little. But maybe not.

  • Elmer J Fudd

I've done that, alisande. When living on the continent, we took our car with driver position on the left (same as the US) over to the UK on a car ferry and drove around for a week. Visibility wasn't as good as if I'd had a local car but it wasn't a problem, it was the same matter of the brief mental adjustment to which side of the road to drive on, which lane to be in on a highway if driving slower or faster than others, which side to pass on, and what direction to use to enter and exit roundabouts (clockwise, instead of counter-clockwise as here).

Many British people do the opposite, take their right-hand drive cars to the continent and drive all over. It's not even slightly challenging.

Thanks but nah, not so much. But I do work at not being dumb, a little every day. Better to learn and know stuff (including lots that will never be of use) than to not try to learn at all and be caught ignorant and often facing a problem because of all the things one could know but that hasn't been learned yet. I'm not particularly compulsive but I detest finding myself at a disadvantage or facing an avoidable challenge because of being caught in a situation when I really should know at least a little about something and don't.

It was the best wedding I have ever seen. Her dress was stunning and much like Kate’s sister, Pippa, wore which wowed everyone. No it wasn't from the Say Yes To the Dress collection where people want their cowboy boots to go with the dress. Or the dress is corseted with big boobs hanging out. The style is very chic and reminds me of the high style of the 1940s.I am Episcopalian and very proud that our presiding bishop gave a heartwarming speech about love. Stand By Me refers to the Lord in this instance and as well as the couple. The are soooo many different Anglicans and some who would not welcome gay people in their church. The difference in traditional Episcopalians is they would ask them to join us. The choir is as Episcopalian in their choices as any other because they have a choice. Also there are many Episcopal churches who have predominantly black members because that's how they started after slavery ended - if you are wondering. Love trumps all. I loved every bit of their choices and say Huzzah to a ceremony that made people feel so positive about diversity in a negative world.
