Small exterior makeover on 70's house
Comments (28)Shutters. Yeah, I was an early adopter of the size-appropriateness, but there's more to it. Hinges, dogs, latches, and this: if they are louvered, the louvers need to be pointing up when they are open, so that they point down when they are closed, letting water run down them. But, since very few people ever close their functioning shutters in the US, the louvers need to point down when they are open so they don't rot. Personal family story: a relative visiting from the old country told my grandfather his shutters were upside down. He flipped them accordingly, but the next year he noticed trouble with the water running behind the shutters. So back they flipped. Incorrect but not a problem. So, don't get into the math of the shutters. They are decorative. Just make for a pleasing proportion. Your house is charming. Consider putting a cement or limestone cap on the planter, put non-living seasonal decor on it, maybe something on the wall behind, and enjoy. My personal presence for metals is brass, but that's just me....See More70s split level exterior house paint and landscaping
Comments (9)The shrubs that block sight lines to the front door need to be removed. Can you add photos? The one you have is a good overview, but doesn’t give enough detail. Stand about 30’ straight out from the front door and turn your body so you are facing the left property line. Take a series of photos from the same place by rotating your body to create a set of slightly overlapping photos that span from the left property line to the right property line. Comments (5)You're just looking for a color recommendation? Well, common belief on this forum is that painted brick is not preferred. Does the roof stay? It's hard to tell what color it is presently. And the house is currently mauve? The (black?) shutters stay? I'm a traditionalist. I believe I would do plain old white to go along with the black shutters. You said it's a heavily treed lot so a very light color is probably best. (Unless you'd rather fade the house into its background. Some people do.) Though you didn't ask, I also think a wider, more defined sidewalk would add a lot, along with cutting back the shrubbery at the steps. And I'm envious of your full redbud and blooming daffodils. It was -6 degrees here this morning! 🥶...See MoreExterior paint ideas 70s modern house
Comments (12)I really like the color it is, but understand not wanting the pink tones. I’d stay in the brown family, and keep the brick as is. It’s organic and in keeping with the surroundings, which is important with this style architecture. If you haven’t already, do some research on this wonderful style of house … embrace it’s heritage. It’s a really nice one. :) Unfortunately, too many across the country are disappearing under heavy ”updates”. (I don’t mean you’re doing that, just the current trend of trying to remove the ’70’s charm and history of these homes.)...See MoreSaypoint zone 6 CT
