I have to agree with artemis those buy lists for this area are basically worthless except for staples like catfood and condiments. There is no guarantee that the item will be of a quality that you want to bring home or an alternate is better or on sale. When I was grocery shopping, it seems like a long time ago, I would have a general idea of what I thought I wanted then allowed the in store sales and quality of various fresh food guide my purchases. This area is normally a test market for new products. Although the ones I like seldom make it I have found some wonderful things by just opening my eyes to what is available. If I went with an item by item list that would never happen.

Thx spire for all the links. They look promising. I suppose a kit or prefab price would be a little more transparent unless u want to buy a stock home from a builder. I do knowyou can buy them with different levels of finish, from just a skeleton to fitted out with all the bells and whistles. But really I don’t know much about kits or prefabs—Just a little about Sears homes from the 1900s. And my mother bought a home for retirement that was pre built iin the 1950s in Michigan and trucked down to Dayton, Ohio, and it was quite elegant and about 2500 sq ft. She was not the original owner bit we found out from the owners‘ grandchildren. I have looked at a few websites and the prefabs are not cheap and can be quite expensive—into the millions, plus labor, plus foundation, plus land, plus landscaping. Personally, I am not necessarily looking for a bargain, I just want to minimize headaches. I am going on vacay now but when I return I am going to call a few of the sources Spire listed to get timelines. (we are trying to have a pool put in and there is a 2 year wait on those around here.) So much of this depends on area, that it is hard to comment. That would be ridiculously high in either area I have homes in. I called some friends at the 84 lumber in my home state, and they tell me that they currently have a few kits going for between $160 and $180 per finished square foot (that is the all in price other than land). Having said that, the prices per square foot that get thrown around on this site, don't resemble the prices in my home area in any way. A well appointed high end house there is $300 per square foot and it isn't unusual at all to get a production builder home at $175 per square foot... and those are today's prices. Not last year's. In my current area, it is a bit closer to $200 per square foot, but again, that price is not an outlier. It is the typical price. This doesn't mean your area is going to be similar, but the price you are getting does seem a bit too high.
