Wallpaper removal? Recs on what I should use
Comments (8)Boxerpups, If NONE of this works.... I've taken down wallpaper in my entire house, and most of it was horrible but eventually came down. Stuck to the original wallboard with too little primer. We ended up with countless holes to patch. Well in the MBR I finally gave up, it defeated me. Hired someone to put up 1/4" wallboard over the whole room. It's like thick cardboard. Like new walls! He pulled off the baseboards and replaced them so they look correct. The trim around the doors and windows just got a little "shallower". We put crown molding around the ceiling to cover the seam. (We were doing that anyway.) I wouldn't have done it in the LR, but upstairs I really don't think anyone would guess. Something to keep in mind. Good Luck!...See MoreVinyl wallpaper??? Should I paint it or just cover it up?
Comments (7)Research wallpaper removal...there are a lot of posts online where people share their techniques to minimize drywall damage. A steamer might also make the job easier and minimize wall damage. The painter did not want to do this because it is a PITA job...of course when she showed you...it caused damage; it sounds as if she did nothing to mitigate it so it became a job she did not have to do. Removal and repair will be tedious, somewhat messy, but totally doable for someone who researches. Also research drywall repair techniques after removal of wallpaper. Once the wallpaper and paste is off, buy a small piece of drywall; replicate the damage you see on your walls, and practice repairs with drywall compound, types of trowels or blades for the kind of damage, sandpaper/sanding blocks/sponges, and spray texture (recommend for ease of use) if your walls have any kind of texture to them. Remember building up thin layers of compound (dry each layer before you add another) instead of one thick layer works best for repairing any deep damage. You can do this if you research and practice. I taught myself after waiting years for my husband to find someone to repair the walls of our large de-papered family room. I got fed up with his procrastination again and just started...no one can tell what was de-papered/repaired and what wasn't. Patience, diligence, and persnicketiness are important....See MoreAnyone put Gardz on without cleaning wallpaper glue off first?
Comments (14)This is an old post, someone was just asking me how it turned out. I used TSP substitute which did not need to be rinsed. In fact, if you read back to my original post the reason I came asking at all was that I had tried using regular tsp and it needed too much water and wasn't working. Another poster above suggested the substitute tsp and it did work great for me and we didn't have to do anything but scrape. I'm also aware you don't have to use another primer over Gardz, but I was explaining what I did to the person who asked. We used another primer, Gripper I believe because it's pretty thick, as we were still trying to smooth out and add texture to the uneven old plaster walls and because after three skim coats those walls were still pretty thirsty! I'm currently using Gardz over the strip where the wallpaper border ran in our kitchen ceiling, mostly as insurance because I'm having a heck of a time removing it, but using a white primer over the full walls 1) because the full wall needs it and it doesn't need Gardz and 2) so the paint won't look different over the areas that had Gardz under it vs regular primer, which I'd heard could happen....See MoreHow much of bedroom wall should I wallpaper?
Comments (8)Thanks for the response! Have added another couple of photos. Re the bedding, have lots of different colours and patterns (or plain), so that's probably not an issue. The paint swatches are actually wallpaper swatches. The one I've gone for is 3rd from the left, link below. It's a slightly textured linen-effect paper, so pretty plain. And if relevant, opposite the bed is just white floor to ceiling wardrobes across the whole wall. https://www.top-designer.co.uk/products/407506-casamance-shantung-wallpaper-74182746...See MoreSina Sadeddin Architectural Design
