If you are looking to add some visual interest, I'd seek out unusual plant combinations for along the front of the porch. Look into shrubs with foliage or other features that stand out. Weigelea My Monet, Deutzia Chardonnay Pearls, contorted filbert (Henry Lauder's Walking stick), witch hazels, come to mind. If you like boxwoods, a row of them could give a tidy look to your front as well as provide a pleasant evergreen backdrop for some other plants. Or, you could have one boxwood on the far side of the porch with other shrubs and perennials filling in the area. I wouldn't mess with that conifer unless you want to put in a large garden in the front (of course, I think that coudl be lovely as well, but it seems beyond the scope of what you are looking for). How about a few shade perennials slong the curved walk way. Perhaps lady's mantle, variegated soloman's seal, bleeding hearts, toad lily. These coudl be underplanted with some smaller bulbs (crocus o& small narcissus). I would avoid blulbs with large leaves since this is such a high visibility area. The dying leaves just aren't pretty. Also, I would get rid of the shutters. They look out of place to me. Plus, a different set of pots and bench could compliment the front of the house better. Instead of the urn style, I'd look for some more upright planters with simple lines. I love the look of the bench, but it seems too ornate for the porch. Is there anythign wrong with the existing walkway? Uneven surface, poor drainage, etc? I'd focus on a few plants with features YOU find interesting instead of tearing out hardscape features unless they have issues that need to be addressed.

Even if you could have shutters would you really want to - I wholeheartedly agree with the above posters, except my order would be: Doorway first - if the existing door is attractive and/or vintage & original to house then just get a better quality storm door that lets us see it. Or think about whole new door. That really is the very most prominent noticeable thing about your house, and your chance to make an architectural statement. I like the awning too, if it was the right style/color to coordinate w/ door and rails so your entryway feels unified/cohesive. Then re-do the garden beds - as a gardener Id be itchin to get in there and not just weed, but totally renovate the bed by digging out everything and getting good quality garden soil. Guess Im assuming that if weeds have taken over that means the soil is probably pretty crappy but that may not be the case. Id put in at least one or two SUBSTANTIAL flowering shrubs, perhaps roses. As a gardener that all sounds like FUN to me - but your mileage may vary. Also concealment of garbage can is a good idea. Whats to the left of your door/stairs, looks like some plants/ shrubberies over there too?.

I think the bones of your living room are excellent, it only needs a few tweaks. It needs more color and interest in the way of texture. I'll give you some suggestions, using the furniture that you have. I'll assume that you like blue and yellow, because you have a blue throw, a pillow with yellow and a yellow lamp. Blue and yellow work very well together, think of the iris. You need to increase their presence by way of wall art or other displays and I would put something in those color palettes on the long narrow walls flanking the french doors. I have absolutely no idea what type of art or collectibles you like. I am just picking things that have these colors in them. On those narrow walls I myself would either hang plates (since I collect them) or butterflies (since I collect those as well. I would not do blue and white plates, that's a cliche by now. I would find some marvelous vintage china plates on eBay or some other auction site. But check out mounted butterflies on eBay none of them are going extinct, you don't have to worry about that, and they are all reasonably priced. Or interesting decoupage plates. For added interest, go a drop to either side on the color wheel from blue and yellow, or add some black. Behind your chair with the yellow floral pillow I would get a piece piece of art with both blue and yellow in it, and the same for the other wall where you know have the shelves. I would move the small pictures elsewhere. I would change out the throw pillows for something more like : I would also replace the rug with a quality, timeless, hand-made Oriental rug, you can get either a hand-knotted Persian, or a woven tribal, and the prices of these have gone way down lately. I think the room would also be enriched and grounded by switching out the current ottoman by using an ottoman of brown leather, with a marvelous tray on top. Also, instead of that tiny green plant on the mantle, bring life into the room with at least one, may be two large floor plants, at least 6 feet tall , such as a fiddle leaf fig or a kentia palm. Also, get a large flowering plant such as an orchid. try not to get a phaelanopsis, the whole world has those, Trader Joe's has all sorts of interesting orchid plants, some really look like weird butterflies. (isn't nature marvelous??) On one mantel on each side you can put some things of interest. Think odd numbers for each side. So on the left use 1, 3, or 5 things, same for the right, and they should be of varying heights. examples can be vases of differing textures (think Jonathan Adler), candlesticks, statuary. Pretty room, pretty rug, nice furniture. Just needs accessorizing and perhaps a different furniture layout. I don't like that tall bookcase between the two windows. I'd move it to the opposite wall, i.e. to the left of the entrance (presuming that's just a blank wall). Then I'd slide the desk over to that back left wall -- in the same orientation it has now -- aligning the front edge with the left edge of the window. That would allow you to position a computer monitor in that back left corner where there's a plug, and the ugly back side of the monitor and all the cabling would be largely hidden. I'd move that small set of drawers where the bookcase is now, centered between the windows. I also vote for a floor lamp where the set of drawers is now, or, alternatively, a table lamp on the drawer set and a small upholstered chair in that corner. A second table lamp on the front left corner of the desk would be lovely. Add a rich-colored roman blind, a plant or two, and artwork on that wall across from the window. The view from outside would be so pretty with the lamp and artwork behind it. A little pillow on the desk chair would be nice :-) Do nothing with that pair of small windows: they're perfect as they are!
